RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

Coursework and a lack of understanding and respect

OK. Well, I spent last week doing nothing but CW, infact the only day I had off was Saturday. I came home from school, had a sandwich and went straight onto the computer at about 4.30 to start cw, I didn't leave it until after ten most nights and after 11 one night in particular. THEN i have to face teachers who don't seem to understand or believe that when you say I WAS DOING CW ALL NIGHT that you actually were DOING CW ALL NIGHT. despite the fact that i've always been a good student, conscientous, perhaps not fantastic at every subject but who is ANYWAY, its not like me to hand in work late so I was extremely annoyed when on bringing a note about cw to a teacher of a subject I happen to adore I was fairly badly recieved. Yes, I didn't have this cw but I had my geog in? WHAT DID SHE WANT ME TO DO, DO HALF OFF ALL MY CW AND BRING IN NOTES TO EVERYBODY? (ok im not sure how well i explained that bit but anyway, ON TO MY NEXT SECTION OF MY LITTLE RANT)

I DESPISE SCIENCE, i want to do something in literature yet I'm forced into this chemistry, physics and bio crap grrrrrrr. As if that wasn't bad enough, our chemistry teacher is absolutley terrifying. She's the most intimidating person I've ever met under 5ft! Me and my friend just realised that we both actually felt sick going to her class we were so nervous about it. THEN when this teacher was talking about cw, she said how she "understood" how we have loads of cw, BUT then she went on to say how, we had to, ya no, sacrifice watching that football match or whatever....
scuuseme??? DID SHE JUST SAY THAT>>> Bigeek

I HAVEN'T WATCHED TELEVISION IN TWO WEEKS!!!!! AJHOIASFAIHFPIASHFPIAHFPIASHFPIASHPIF

ANOTHER THING she wanted to know "why i hadn't prepared very well for her test" YA WANNA NO WHY, REGARDLESS OF HOW FAR AHEAD YOU SET YOUR TEST I WILL STILL HAVE SO MUCH CW THAT I CAN BARELY FIND TIME TO TAKE A FUCKING BATH!!!!!!!

And another thing, how come people can get out of a whole days school to go to some football match yet we couldn't get out for ten minutes to do a drama gcse practical!!? I mean a practical which contributes to our final gcse mark. ALL YEAR these footballers and camogie players are mentioned for winning matches yet why arn't the drama students given any credit for the incredible amount of work they have to put in! WEll, thats about all i've got for now...feels good to just...say itlolSmile

WAIT on emore thing, we are forced into doing RE for gcse which is incredibly unfair for one I'm not even that religious, and my aunt who lectures at queens university tells me how they completely overlook it, it is a pointless subject!

What are your thoughts?

yeah, i guess a person can get used to anything and it will become boring sooner or later.

ps. you don't have to write a title for all your posts, just the ones where you start a new topic. Biggrin

I agree. I have spent most of the last month doing homework and coursework. I just don't care! I wish the teachers could actually see the amount of time spent doing this work.
I hate school and most of what it stands for. My parents can't afford homeschooling.

Down with coursework!

For about two years on and off I was able to spend all of my time on schoolwork and still not complete it. Then I read stuff that made me stop caring.

Even though I realized how stupid school was, I couldn't stop doing schoolwork because I was afraid (literally) of getting bad grades and uncomfortable with the idea of getting bad grades. But as I read stuff that explained why why it was so messed-up, this fear lessened.

So just decide that you'll read something one day instead of doing coursework. Then you'll begin to read more and do less coursework. You'll probably get lower grades, but you'll care less. And eventually you'll probably start to like science, just not the classes.

Oh so very true. My parents can't afford homeschooling either. I agree with down with coursework, even though I've never done it before. If that's what I have to do in high school...
