RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

The forums are mostly read-only and are in a maintenance/testing phase, before being permanently archived. Please use this time to get the contact details of people you'd like to keep in touch with. My contact details are here.

Please do not make a mirror copy of the forums in their current state - things will still change, and some people have requested to be able to edit or delete some of their personal info.

I say we have a protest!

It would be a good idea to make a non-violent protest on school. If we got violent, that would be reason enough for the government to try to use even more force back at us. Imagine it: if we had a non-violent protest, and they use force like guns or something, we would be making them look bad. We protest until the end, whether they close down schools or not!

It'd definatly get some attention. We'd need a lot of schools from different parts of the country, and the world to really have a massive impact. It would take a while to plan out and have everyone cooperate accordingly. But if it all somehow worked, it'd be a huge impact.

Yeah, during the impact, other people (people who are out of school) might join us.

What would be our point exactly? If you take on too much with one protest it tends to be unsucessfull, where as if you have a few speciffic things you'd like to change or propose, it might slip under the radar.

I, myself, am not against schools so much as I am for making them better. And less mandatory...and more alternative. [You know only 20% of the population are auditory learners and yet that's the main method teachers use for schools? So really only 20% are learning effectively in the classroom. This is the type of stuff I want to tackle.] I don't think closing down schools right away is all that reasonable.

Let's do the time warp again!

HEY! Isn't that what Gandhi did???
And, I think the hardest part would be to get other people to cooperate.

Wow, I didnt think so many people would actually respond to this. It's not we're actually going to do this though, just something to ponder over. I guess our motivation would be for everyone to change the school system. It's been this way for years, many years. If important things like the constitution and laws are getting updated every so often, why does a school have to stay the same?

yeah, that sounds great. but personally the idea of standing out in a crowd and letting the cops beat the hell out of us with nightsticks seems like a not-so-great idea. protesting=good. martyrdom=bad.

Yeah, but we could make an example out of them. Mwahaha
Like there was this one video, where this one women wasn't doing anything, just yelling at a riot police officer, and he hit her over the head with his night stick.

I think people don't see that school is a problem. Most of the adults I have talked to have disliked school. Yet they seem to see it as a necessary part of growing up. WE know that school isn't a necessary part of growing up. Youth rights makes older people uneasy because minors have been treated like crap for thousands of years. Most adults just can't see minors as able to think for themselves.

I was watching CNN and there was a segment on how to keep your teens safe from predators instant messaging them. I was thinking "WTF?" These teens probably can take better care of themself on the internet than their parents. The segment suggested all sorts of things to take away the privacy of teens, like checking their instant messaging logs and moving the computer to more public areas so parents can check what they teen is doing.

Minors can't be seen as possesions of adults. They should be seen as the wards or dependants of adults. Take care of me but don't take away my freedom.

Happy Camper Wrote:I, myself, am not against schools so much as I am for making them better
If by "making better" you mean "DESTROY", then I'm all for it.

BigWolf Wrote:Gandhi = Passive Resistance
Gandhi = Active Resistance + Nonviolence.

Here is an example:
The Salt Satygraha was a protest against a salt tax in India. It was illegal to make sell or produce salt if you were not British. Gandhi walked to Dandi and harvested salt illegally. In what is now Pakistan, the Khudai Khidmatgar, a group of Muslims following Gandhi's principles, led their own satygraha. During one incident, hundreds of nonviolent protesters were killed when the British opened fire on a crowd of protesters. They didn't use violence and they didn't run away.

Pacifism is good as a method but not as a complete theory. We need courage and to be as nonviolent as we can. In certain situations, violence is the right answer.

If that was me, I'd have RUN LIKE HELL!!!

I think that in general, protesters can do more good alive than dead. Only the really famous ones become martyrs anyway.

Letters are good too. They cant shoot you for writing letters. If you got a huge number of kids and parents and adults to write a lot of letters to boards of education and to your state/country's government then we can get a lot of attention. And no one gets killed in the process Biggrin

Sorry it took so long to post MY reply to this HC, but I'm an auditory learner.
I'm an auditory, or a solitary learner. Laugh (I learn both ways fine) and my class schedule go as following:
Go to class.
Sit down.
Write down assignments.
Teacher makes us correct our homework from the previous day from overhead.
Teacher hands out homework assignment.
Work on assignment for the rest of the day.

I'd say my teachers speak less then 100 words to us during the class period.
This isn't auditory learning.

March 17-21 is the anniversary for the US' occupation in Iraq. Theres going to be activist stuff going on 17-18, and a march or something the 18th. I also hear lots of schools might have walkouts on Monday the 18th. That'd be the perfect time for a national walkout!
