RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

The forums are mostly read-only and are in a maintenance/testing phase, before being permanently archived. Please use this time to get the contact details of people you'd like to keep in touch with. My contact details are here.

Please do not make a mirror copy of the forums in their current state - things will still change, and some people have requested to be able to edit or delete some of their personal info.

I used to think about having a school that, at the end of elementary school, you pick your own carreer and go that way. But you can't get a cool job, that you kind of.... roll into... musician mostly. Laugh And then there's the whole thing with 'People changing their minds ect.

Also, I think a lot of people confuse content-knowledge with learning how to think in different ways. For example, learning a specific mathematical operation may be something that you will never use again. However, you may have done something to influence the way your mind functions, the specific interconnections between neural pathways, and so forth. Knowledge is not like a bag of golf clubs. It's not like that. How, for example, does reading a particular piece of literature affect they ways in which you read and write? Does anyone see what I'm saying here?

I got nothin'.

Teaching for a specific job isn't a very good idea. It's better to have a broad range of knowledge. Not having a good perspective of the world makes you a slave to the man. The problem with school is they force us to learn a broad range of knowledge which may have nothing to do with what I want to learn.

Right. I mean, as a writer, I use everything that's up there. Everything. History, religion, art, science--everything. Does an engineer not need art? Does an artist not need geometry? Do doctors and nurses not need literature? To separate knowledge into disciplines in that way suggests that some people have already been trained to see schooling in that particular way.

I got nothin'.

For practical reasons it's necessary to seperate knowledge into categories but you're right Doc, they all meld into each other. It's impossible to learn everything in science so they break it up even though it is one massive thing.

I'd build a replica of my current school merely for the purpose of knocking it down again.

If I could make a high school, I'd call it Liberty High. It would be wide and open and would have different areas for computers, math, art, science, English, history, geography, social studies, home ec, etc. Students would be able to come and go as they pleased. They would be able to study only what interested them. There would be no dress codes except as necessary for safety, such as wearing aprons in home ec and wearing lab coats and tying one's hair back in science. There would be no prohibitions against cell phones and MP3 players, as some people work better when listening to music. There would be no filters on the computers, only a firewall and antivirus for the safety of the network. Students would be able to swear as much as they wanted, as long as they did not swear at each other. The only thing I would require students to learn is about the Bill of Right and that would be so they could understand what their rights were and not be stumped by the main stream media and government.

I'd call mine Wesley's Awesome School.
I'd be principal and everyone would do what I say.

It'd be awesome. Everyone would be happy, because I'm a nice guy.

Mine would emphasise philosophy of all the subjects and critical thinking. Instead of memorising formulas, writing essays and learning about sea urchins, you would be exploring better ways to do mathematical problems, debating world issues and discussing the mysteries of science. Students below the age of 12 would learn and discuss different things obviously.

All the teachers would have to know a lot about child psychology. Punishments would be abloished, replaced by constant award systems, ecnouragement and self-learning opportunities.

School would not be as centralised, which is inefficient. You would also not need to attend as long as you learn the topics and understand them in some way. So yes, there would be some method of testing knowledge and understanding, but not like the conventional way.

Maths would be just as important as art and metal work would be just as important as english.

Current schools teach things too slowly while a whole topic can be summarised in one day. So at my school you would learn much faster, and only relevant things which you want to learn. You would finish my school in 3-4 years, due to the increased efficiency and faster learning.

This is an interesting subject to say the least.

I would make it very large, and hire only teachers who weren't but-holes, allowed free thinking, required critical thinking, allowed alot of open discussion and debates, and was just awesome.Yes I-pod yes cellphones yes everything. You could learn when you wanted to and where you wanted to. No dress code, but for learnign to accur there would be restrictions on how little they could wear, basically if you won't legally be punished for it it's allowed. Won't get in trouble for drugs, but there would be a section for smoking cigaretes cus i just think not everyoen would want to get second hand smoke. The walls would be painted by students. There would be all sorts of faciliteis ike tons of comupters, labs, everything else you could want. All subjects a student request would be taught.

I highly suggest Mobb Deep's albums The Infamous and Hell on Earth, if you have not listened to it yet.

It would have a huge open space outside w/ a full size hardwood basketball court, it would have a full sized nfl field, w/ yrd lines and stuff. There would be a room with one huge HDTV on the wall w/ a bunch of speakers where kids get to watch a movie if they get all a's-b's on their report card(no movies rated UNDER pg13 allowed) w/ a popcorn machine. The cafateria would have a mini mcdonalds, burger king, fazolis, and stuff, and the seats would be soft and have pillows. The classrooms would have armchairs in it and laptops that the kids would type on istead of writing. There wouldn't be any detentions, and kids would get $27 for getting A+ on a test. You could have phones, ipods whatever. There wouldn't be any homework, the teachers wouldn't give stupid worksheets which take 2 hours to finish then not take a grade on them. There won't be any idiotic rules, like no talking or running or stuff like that. No dress codes.

I hate all the lunch people, the teachers last year w/ that evilness at the thingy whatever it was called, and my friends agree, we hate them!
