RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

The forums are mostly read-only and are in a maintenance/testing phase, before being permanently archived. Please use this time to get the contact details of people you'd like to keep in touch with. My contact details are here.

Please do not make a mirror copy of the forums in their current state - things will still change, and some people have requested to be able to edit or delete some of their personal info.

Well. If you want some stuff to learn...

So. If you want stuff to learn, I figure there has to be places.
And since the internet is pretty big.
I figured.
You can make a big place.
To like. Put links.
To places on the internet.
Where you can learn.
Stuff.

Also, don't forget traditional textbooks, or other books. Most libraries let you do Interlibrary Loan (ILL) for free, where you can order books from libraries everywhere -- even internationally. Often, you have to ask a librarian to put in the order for you, but you can browse available books in libraries all over on Open WorldCat (try searching by title in their google search on the right.)

I find it easiest to use Amazon.com to browse books, and read reviews, then use WorldCat to find out if a given book is available through ILL. Also, sometimes I buy books online, and later sell them via amazon for close to the price I paid. That can be more convenient if you have the money.

Another good option, if you don't mind reading in a library, is to explore university libraries. Most let the public in, though only some let you get a library card to check things out (often for some amount of money.)

Re: Well. If you want some stuff to learn...

Yeah, be careful though if you intend to learn by yourself, this guy actually tells us that the method most teacher teach us sucks but he also says that beginners should have a teacher at the beginning because of all the bad habits they can take if they don't, look at this page:
http://www.pianofundamentals.com/book/en/1.III.18.1

Quote:Many beginners would like to start learning piano on their own, and there are valid reasons for this. However, there is no question that, for the first 6 months (and probably much longer), there is no faster way to start than taking lessons from a teacher, even one who teaches the intuitive method.

[...]

Firstly, the most fundamental things that you do every time you play, such as hand position, sitting position, hand movements, etc., are difficult to explain in a textbook, whereas a teacher can show you instantly, what is right and what is wrong. You don't want to pick up these wrong habits and have to live with them all your life. Secondly, a beginner sitting down at the piano and playing for the first time is usually making at least 20 mistakes at the same time (left-right coordination, volume control, rhythm, arm and body movements, speed, timing, fingering, trying to learn the wrong things first, total neglect of musicality, etc., etc.).

Nice math sites

http://www.artofproblemsolving.com/
Pretty much aimed towards people on high school math teams, lots of great problems with a question database. If you're into proofs, then check out some of the Math Olympiad stuff.

http://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/High_Schoo ... Extensions
Great thing to access during school, since from far away it looks like a normal Wikipedia page. One of my favorite websites.

http://mathworld.wolfram.com/
Great reference, I used to explore this website when i was really young and it helped spark my love of math. Lots of other stuff such as forums (saturated w/ teachers tho).

http://mathforum.org/dr.math/
My favorite website by far, just check it out.

http://www.dansmath.com/
Great problems of the week, over 200 of them with a running contest of points for sending in the right answer that starts at the beginning of the year (definitely NOT updated every week tho, more like a problem of the month)

http://www.cut-the-knot.org/index.shtml
Lots of very fun math applets, wide range of difficulty. Every page on this site loads extremely slow for me.

http://www.qbyte.org/puzzles/
Lots of great problems.

http://www.khanacademy.org/index.html
Just found out about this through the SS forums and the videos cover a wide range of topics and could replace every math course even up into college. Explained extremely slow, tho, but that may have been his intention.

Not into it anymore, but I recommend "C++ without fear" by Brian Overland if you don't know programming yet, or if you know the basics. It might be possible to get it in a library. Also:
