RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

The forums are mostly read-only and are in a maintenance/testing phase, before being permanently archived. Please use this time to get the contact details of people you'd like to keep in touch with. My contact details are here.

Please do not make a mirror copy of the forums in their current state - things will still change, and some people have requested to be able to edit or delete some of their personal info.

Very general. Skid Row is an awesome band.

I highly suggest Mobb Deep's albums The Infamous and Hell on Earth, if you have not listened to it yet.

Lol. Yeah, but I meant European *power* metal. There is a lot of other power metal than European.

Re: Metal.

You forgot the best kind of metal. Metalcore!

Metalcore is a term that refers to a hybrid genre created from Heavy Metal and Hardcore elements. Metalcore remained highly underground throughout the 90's with bands like Crisis and Integrity and gained more popularity at the turn of the century with bands like Avenged Sevenfold, Underoath, and Atreyu.

Re: Metal.

modest mouse Wrote:Heavy metal is a subgenre of rock music that emerged as a defined musical style in the 1970s, having its roots in hard rock bands which, between 1969 and 1974, mixed blues and rock music to create a hybrid with a thick, heavy, guitar-and-drums-centered sound, characterised by the use of highly-amplified distortion.

Out of heavy metal various subgenres later evolved, many of which are referred to simply as "metal". As a result, "heavy metal" now has two distinct meanings: either the genre and all of its subgenres, or the original heavy metal bands of the 1970s style sometimes dubbed "traditional metal", as exemplified by Deep Purple, Led Zeppelin, and Black Sabbath.

Heavy metal began gaining popularity in the 1970s and 1980s, at which time many of the now existing subgenres first evolved. Heavy metal has a large world-wide following of fans known by terms such as "metalheads" and "headbangers".\

Black metal.
Black metal started in the early 1980s with bands such as Bathory, Sodom, Mayhem, Mercyful Fate, and Hellhammer/Celtic Frost; and with asthetic and lyrical influences from Venom. These bands were Thrash metal bands that formed the prototype for the later second generation of black metal. The second wave of black metal, an essentially Scandinavian movement, started in the late 1980s and early 1990s, primarily in Norway. Black metal has gathered intense criticism from many sectors of society, for its brutal aesthetic, its misanthropic spirit, and the extreme ideology displayed by some musicians working in the National Socialist Black Metal subgenre. However, at the same time it experienced a meteoric rise in popularity among metal fans during the 1990s.

Nu-metal
Nu metal (also called new metal, aggro metal or nü metal using the traditional heavy metal umlaut) is a musical genre that has origins in the mid 1990s. It typically fuses influences from the grunge and alternative metal of the early 1990s with hip hop, electronic music and other metal genres, most often thrash metal and groove metal.

Death metal
Death metal is a sub-genre of heavy metal that evolved out of thrash metal during the early 1980s.

Death metal is a subgenre of heavy metal. Growling vocals are the primary identifier for death metal for the newer generation. But this by itself also includes works such as Welcome to Hell from 1981 by British metal group Venom where the vocals may be mostly "growling", but the music is not what is generally meant by "death metal" today. Venom never labelled what they did, but their album Black Metal became the basis for labelling music with 'Satanic' lyrics and growling vocals as "black metal".

Thrash metal
Thrash metal is a subgenre of heavy metal music, one of the extreme metal subgenres, that is characterised by its high speed and aggression.

The origins of thrash metal are generally traced to the late 1970s and early 1980s, when a number of bands began incorporating the sound of the New Wave of British Heavy Metal with elements of hardcore punk (in particular its drum tempos), creating a new genre and developing into a separate movement from punk. This genre is much more aggressive compared to its relative, speed metal. There is often significant crossover from one metal category to another, and the influence of non-metal genres, including classical music and jazz, is not uncommon.

did he just ghetto jack that from wikipedia?

I hope you're joking. Metalcore along with nu-metal is the cancer that's killing real metal.

actually metal is no sub genre of rock. it just evolved from rock. it all started with "the devil's note" which black sabbath played. some ignorant bastards thought that the devil's note was really the devil's note. it was just dark music but nothing satanic. first it was just metal and just another word for hard rock but then judas priest came in and made it heavy and that gave birth to my favorite sub genre:heavy metal. after judas priest came iron maiden, ozzy and metallica. metallica created thrash metal.... i think Confused after that came other sub genres which im too lazy to explain Biggrin

It started off as a Rock sub genre, but that this point it really has exploded in to a genre of it's own.

Metal Is Back Wrote:Anybody got any technical-jazz death metal, progressive, or melodeath suggestions?

Ooooh man this is right down my ally. If you're looking for something like Atheist, what you should listen to is an obscure Czech band by the name of Scenery. You have no idea how surprised I was to find that they're almost as good as the metal gods Atheist themselves. I have the download link for one of their albums if you can't find it anyplace...

As for melodeath, check out the following albums:
Edge of Sanity - Crimson
Insomnium - Above the Weeping World
Kalmah - The Black Waltz

For more technical death metal:
Anata - The Infernal Depths of Hatred (This one actually fulfills two of your requests, as it is Technical Melodic Death Metal.)
Gorod - Process of a New Decline
Obscura - Cosmogenesis
