RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

The forums are mostly read-only and are in a maintenance/testing phase, before being permanently archived. Please use this time to get the contact details of people you'd like to keep in touch with. My contact details are here.

Please do not make a mirror copy of the forums in their current state - things will still change, and some people have requested to be able to edit or delete some of their personal info.

Meh, we have camera around our school. But you can't see where they are. If I found out they're in the girls toilets I'll be taking them to court.

A camera IN the toilet?
I'd hate to have to clean that up! Laugh

Seriously tho, having cameras everywhere like that is beyond creepy.
Next thing ya know, they'll want to build a barbed wire fence....sheesh.

Not in the toilets, on the walls near the mirrors. Holy shit.....what if it's a two-way mirror? Must investigate...

The cameras in my school are pretty obvious. We only have them in hallways though, not between locker rows or in classrooms.

Imagine that, you accidentally break the mirror, and behind it there's a fat guy sleeping in a chair, with a bunch of camera feeds on a tv screen! Omg

I'd scream and kick him so hard in the face. But then I'd be up for assault charges.....meh, I'd probably run up to the principal's office.

Oh my school was on the news all the time last year.. my school name is Sandalwood high school a national model school oh yeah today a coach here at school told us it said in our code of conduct that a teacher had the right to search us at anytime and if we refused they could make us and if we fought back they could fight back umm is this true I think he is wrong but me and my friends are not sure.

The judicial maxim is "innocent until proven guilty" so I assume there is a clause within the US constitution that prevents unreasonable search and seizure. In the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms, I "have the right to be secure against unreasonable search and seizure." Which means they can open your locker, because the locker is owned by the school, but they can't go through your stuff or you without cause. So a teacher couldn't just search you, they would have to have a demonstratable cause.

however, your belongings are in their owned property, so while they cannot steal it, they could search it

Eh, my school would probably find some shithead loophole and take all my stuff. Or they'd do it without one.

During the school day, teachers and other school personnel are your legal guardians and have most of the same rights as your parents. Which means they can beat you as punishment (though it is banned in 90% of school districts) and they can take your stuff if they have reason, e.g. you bring a machete to school. Also realize that what teachers called reasonable is not always so. If you don't take your hat off in the halls at my school, the principal will take it from you. They give it back at the end of the day but they still just grab it off your head and walk away.

probable cause doesn't apply in school. for search and seizure they need what's called "reasonable suspicion" which is a lot more loose and vague.

And with the whole Terrorist bullshit courtosy of the government attack on the twin towers, the teachers are as fucking pararnoid as ever. My science teacher somehow belives that we may "accidentally" dial a number on our cell phones which will
detonate a bomb in the school planted by terrorists.

LOL, that's almost stupid enough to not be funny. but not quite.

yeah, in middle school they said we couldn't have fieldtrips because they were worried about terrorists bombing famous landmarks (i call bullshit, they just spent all their budget!) and now you see kids on the news getting suspended bor doing the "gun" gesture with their finger and thumb.
