RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

Is society really becoming more dangerous?

So the other day I was watching a program on the BBC and it raised a good point, the argument that Society and our Environment is not becoming more dangerous place, but rather that we see it as dangerous because the Media oversaturates fear.

During the introduction of Television and Radio, there wasn't actually a great deal on due to the fact that A) it was a new technology and B) only the five richest kings in Europe owned them. But as it grew more widespread and we learned how to make programs that didn't consist of people checking whether they could hear each other, we had a new problem: What the fuck do we actually put in our programs? And how do we make them worth watching?

One possible solution was to make a program entirely dedicated to reporting over-exaggerated bullshit what was going on in the world: the news. However, back in the good old days, news programs were boring as fuck as they consisted primarily of a guy speaking in monotone for extended periods of time against a dull backdrop. They needed to grab viewers and eyes, and so news of the scaremongering nature became more apparent. As times shudder increasingly towards present day Television, Newspapers, and the Internet have become increasingly bordering on the completely terrifying as reports of Terrorism, Recession, Crime and General Doom are commonplace.

How does this work so well? A part of the human brain is specifically designed to react to things that could potentially be a threat. This comes from our hunter-gatherer instincts that saved us from being eaten by ravenous tigers. But in our modern society, there are no ravenous tigers (unless you count chavs or gangstas or other dangers, but as we have learned they are not as commonplace as the media would have you think)
but that part of our brain that monitors dangers is still there, not being used.

Click on this link and tell me, what side of the screen did you look at? With seemingly apparent dangers everywhere, our OHSHIT stimuli are being tickled on an almost nonstop basis. Yet why do we continue buy into the whole EVERYTHING IS OUT TO KILL YOU mindset? Are we addicted to danger like a drug? Dicuss.

Its how they grab viewers and readers. Theres never a day gone by without tabloid headlines being overexagerated bullshit. The general populace of societal beings are sucked in. And the clueless nation sit down at tea time and watch their propaganda machines, drawn in by these stupid headlines to be lured into a false sense of what is truly going on around them...

Hey, at least your newspapers open up with doom and disaster and not what sick sexual preference some fat 40 year old virgin politician enjoys watching D:

Not to mention conspiracy theories.

Let go of all desire for the common good, and the good becomes common as grass.

Re: Is society really becoming more dangerous?

I gotta agree.

Society has never been all the way safe and nowadays its just the media and government trying to scare us so we feel like we have to depend on them to be safe.
Same with the pigs losing their jobs and suddenly trying to trick us into thinking things will become more dangerous without alot of them around.

Re: Is society really becoming more dangerous?

More dangerous compared to what? We don't have lions and tigers running around in cities or snakes waiting to be stepped on, so I'd say it's actually safer than it was before it was really called 'society'.

People tend to live longer now than they did back before we figured out how to cure a whole bunch of diseases, so I'd say we're a lot safer from dying unexpectedly than we used to be.

So, yeah, the world really isn't that dangerous, unless you're in Iraq or something... but even that probably isn't anywhere near as dangerous as they make it look on TV. I mean, the fact that there are still people alive in Iraq at all means that it's not a case of certain death just being there.

I'm all for being careful/paranoid but staying home just because it's OMG SO DANGEROOS outside is just insane.
