RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

Inducing Sleep Paralysis

I'm fascinated by sleep paralysis, lucid dreaming and out of body experiences, actually looking at yourself from a different viewpoint in the astral plane.

I sometimes get it naturally, like I know I'm asleep but I'm struggling immensly hard to open my eyes and move my body, even though its impossible, and I slip between glimpses of my bed and the lucid dream. Sometimes its absolutely terrifying. Its a gateway to lucid dreaming and even though I'm skeptical, out of body experiences.

So here goes... I'll post here if anything interesting happens lately.

Re: Inducing Sleep Paralysis

I used to get this quite often when I still stayed on the farm in the middle of nowhere. It mostly happened during afternoon naps... I don't do that anymore, so that's probably why I don't really get it anymore.

I had one really really awesomesauce lucid dream resulting from it where I was flying through space, and all the planets and stuff was in the fullest detail, it was actually insanely detailed... sometimes I wonder if that was a dream at all... I doubt my brain can render that much detail while I'm asleep. Razz

Re: Inducing Sleep Paralysis

This may sound weird, but I always get sleep paralysis if I take a nap during the afternoon and sleep in a mummy position.

On your back, body straight, feet together, arms crossed on your chest with your hands resting on your shoulders.

I don't know why I even did that position when I slept one time, but when I did, epic sleep paralysis ensued. I tried it again, same result.

Re: Inducing Sleep Paralysis

Actually, yeah. I also read somewhere that sleeping on your back helps to make it happen. It happens more when I'm on my back, but it also happened a few times when I was lying on my left side... not my right for some reason. Shrug

Re: Inducing Sleep Paralysis

I haven't been able to do anything so far regarding sleep paralysis or lucid dreams.

However, I've just woke up from the most amazing dream I've had in a good while. Someone was driving a car, and I was having sex with some amazingly hot chick in the passanger seat, I was literally fullfilling my deepest fantasies right there. It felt very real as I touched her. Her tits felt real and the endless 1000 mile an hour rubbing of the vaginal area felt real. It wasn't a wet dream either.

I'm starting to question why this was so pleasurable. Does our brain make it so? Does my brain make me feel a certain way? Another factor to consider is that because I was dreaming, I wasn't distracted physically from the subject. I could also play out the perfect scenario because it was a dream.

Its going to be hard, but I'm not gonna try and masturbate until I end up with a wet dream.

Re: Inducing Sleep Paralysis

Lawl. I never succeeded on the above by the way Razz

I figured I might record my dreams as it apparently helps you remember them more in detail.

I think I was talking to someone in some internet chatroom, I took his name down but I couldn't quite make out his name and we agreed to meet up at some airport. I think his first name ended up being takey. I think I took a plane from Liverpool to somewhere I don't know. But two of my friends in real life were on it aswell.

The plane arrived at it its destination, and this guy I was going to meet was really stressed out, crying and stuff. So I said, "Is this really you?" I started questioning whether he really did get a plane. It was him and I had spelt his name name wrong earlier as he had a website with his name on it. He must have been American, I remember his family sounding American and they weren't happy with him but they were soft on him, they told him to go with them and just go home.

So we parted, I made my way through an airport and boarded the plane, went to a seat and there was a girl there but I decided against sitting there because I didn't want to get embarrassed since there were over seats available, I found my two friends and we sat down. There were no seat belts on this plane and I don't remember much about the first journey.

I started to think about how I paid for my journey. I thought that I never had the money and I simply used my mums credit card and she wouldn't be best pleased with me buying a £470 ticket.

The pilot started to move pretty quickly with the plane, even though I don't think all the passengers were on. I starting talking to my friends and said "I like a pilot who likes the get stuff done and going" and the suddenly my view changed to the cockpit and I knew that he wanted to crash the plane. We hit a red SUV car in the road, everything went loud and the plane tilted. I was in shock for a few seconds as I knew I was going to die. Then for another few seconds I went slightly lucid and thought "This must be a dream this can't be real" and I woke up instantly.

Yeah, can be scary as hell. One time I was trying as hard as hell to wake myself up. I was under the covers and it felt like I was suffocating and I kept slipping into the dream and reality.

RE: Inducing Sleep Paralysis

I find that a lot of times when my alarm first goes off in the morning and I hit snooze (because I'm a lazy bastard) I can go right back into the dream I was just having as if I never left it and sometimes I can even control parts of it. It seems like I have to just keep thinking about the dream in the short time I'm awake for it to work, though. Sometimes I can control the whole thing as if I'm just daydreaming or something but if I drift too far away from what the dream was originally about I completely lose it and reality bitch slaps my mind. I'll try to take note of exactly what I do if I can remember it next time.

I've had sleep paralysis many times before. It was beyond unpleasant. I swear I could feel my blankets being lifted off me, and I've always had this feeling of something terrible watching me, and waiting. I've never had my heart beating so fast in my life.

So, I was learning something, right? Then I went to school.

RE: Inducing Sleep Paralysis

Sleep Paralysis is fucking terrible. I almost suffocated like, every night, which is why I don't really sleep anymore, I shift back and forth between resting my eyes and stimming. On my left side. My most recent one is when I was in slow-mo trying to kill 2 people with throwing a knife and I got one, but the other shot me in the head with a 9mm and the dream went from slow-mo to real time (like ZED time in Killing Floor) and I died. I was actually "experiencing" being dead, and I tried like fuck to wake up, but I get this feeling as I'm trying. Not sure how to explain it, ever have one of those ticklish pains? it feels like that as I try desperately to move my limbs. And also, I get this "crushing" sensation inside my brain, it's probably the electrical impulses being backed up that were sent to my limbs, which makes sense: sleep paralysis is a defense mechanism that the body employs to prevent you from moving around in your sleep by interpreting the actions in the dream as if they were real...

I tried Mirtazapine to get rid of it but it makes me feel like shit. Always so tired and numb and tingles when I walk. Fuck.

TRIGGER WARNING: THIS TRIGGER WARNING CONTAINS TRIGGER WARNINGS!

Dear Tumblrites: Despite your wrongly self-diagnosed PTSD, no line of scientific evidence suggests people can be triggered over the internet. Triggering works through the senses (i.e. smell, taste, touch, vision, hearing.) but it goes through real time; if you're not experiencing it in real life as it's ACTUALLY HAPPENING in your ACTUAL life, you CANNOT be triggered. The only exception to this is if you have a seizure, but then again, that's triggered by epilepsy (i.e. rapidly-changing flashing lights) NOT PTSD. Remembering a bad incident is NOT the same thing as having a flashback. When you remember, you think; when you flashback, you feel.

RE: Inducing Sleep Paralysis

This is strange... I was diagnosed with sleep paralysis. I mean DIAGNOSED with it. Took it like it was an actual DISEASE or something, at least that's what I always thought, I mean I had one of those wuddayacallits--those polysomnograph things for it. They were going to give me some narcolepsy meds, too, but I didn't have that other symptom thank God. Anyway, it happened to ME as long as I can remember. I remember I saw this giant tarantula on my bed when I was four that had horns and all I could do was scream. It looked real as hell. Then it was gone. That was the first time back when. That's mostly what it's like for me. It's been good for me I guess, because it got me interested in that stuff when I thought I had some demon haunting me because I kept seeing a man appear and vanish at the foot of my bed. Scary stuff. I could have died, I was so scared at the time. Anyway once I got into that spiritualism stuff a door appeared for me. It was like two different things.
I tried to astrally project before, recently actually, but just stopped after I started to sort of vibrate. Best of luck to you doing it yourself, though.

RE: Inducing Sleep Paralysis

Fuck, I wouldn't induce sleep paralysis at all. Last time I had it, it felt like something was scurrying around me on my bed on all fours, like some kind of demented animal. Other times I've had it I've seen shit like blood-red eyes staring at me from the corner of my room, heard voices whispering, felt like I was being sucked into my bed, and felt something lay on top of me. No thank you. I can occasionally lucid dream and that's good enough for me.

I've had one lucid dream I can remember. I was in the gym at my school standing next to these two girls I've never seen before. All of a sudden I realized it was a dream, and so I told the, guess what, this is a dream! Then I stuck my finger in one of their mouths just for shits and giggles...it was so realistic lol. Then it ended. I want to have more of those and start a revolution or something.

No, this is Patrick.

RE: Inducing Sleep Paralysis

I used to get paralysis every other night of sleep. It's the worst thing, especially at a time of having no idea what exactly it is. My body would freeze over as I lay awake in bed. All of my energy drained away, making it inexplicably hard to move; almost impossible. The worst thing about it was that my breathe would slowly fade -- scary as Hell, man. The feeling of it doing so forced me to break the paralysis, taking all of my effort and strength to do.

I clearly recall this one time where my breathe was fading as, as I said, it did. I didn't break my paralysis "quickly enough"; i.e. before my breathe seemed to stop. Everything went dark... I thought I was about to die when this happened. Instead though (Laugh), an image of the front of some red plane making its rapid, completely vertical way down to Earth appeared -- I could hear the motor of it and everything, eh. Too realistic. A mili-second before crashing into a big, red "X" marked on this tropical island, my vision returned to a sort of fucking blackness that mocked my terrified self whom thought the dream was real. I woke up and never went back to bed.

RE: Inducing Sleep Paralysis

Sleep paralysis Is creepy as hell, i'd never be willing to try it. Almost all the experiences I've heard about it had been scary or negative. I've tried lucid dreaming Before though, came close a few times.

RE: Inducing Sleep Paralysis

Apparently you can self induce a sleep paralysis by just lying down in bed (on your back) with hands by your side. And for 20 mins just lie there and don't move. Don't even itch or anything, just blink and breathe normally.
