RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

The forums are mostly read-only and are in a maintenance/testing phase, before being permanently archived. Please use this time to get the contact details of people you'd like to keep in touch with. My contact details are here.

Please do not make a mirror copy of the forums in their current state - things will still change, and some people have requested to be able to edit or delete some of their personal info.

The "I Hate School" Book

Cosbydaf just came up with an idea: We can all write a book on why we hate school and stuff...So...

Spambot Kill Counter: 33
Spambot Kill Counter as Spambot Hell's Devil: Countless

Buying a high powered computer: 500 bucks
Getting gift wrap: 10 bucks maybe
Seeing the horror on that special someone's face once they tear off the gift wrap and see a Windows 98: Priceless.

Sure. It could work. What about the "attention grabber", you know, to keep people interested.

Okay, kickass! Next order of busniess is figuring out who wants to do it....actually, how about you just write your part, then contact Me or Cosbydaf if you want it in the bookthingy. Then I'll use some sort of nifty interwebz randomizer thingy to figure out the order of the peoples. You can write as much as you want, including experiences, thoughts, rants, raves, etc, but it has to be about your dislikes and negative views on schools today. Of course, if you like certain aspects of school, you could add those in, but the main focus of the book is what you don't like about school. In short: Stay on topic as much as you can, write as much as you want, etc, etc.

Of course.....this is only valid if Cosby says so.

Okay, I'll just write it on here. This is just an opening for one of my chapters.

The Suffering of Dark Soul X

Alright, my suffering started in kindergarten, all the way to here. I was picked on every year and in every day at school. It happened at least once a day. I was kicked, punched, elbow dropped on, etc. I was even speared (as in WWE spear) against a door, and my leg was almost dislocated when someone tackled it. I was spat on, so much pain...I had suicidal and homicidal thoughts. No one understood. I was alone...

I don't really think this has to be a book, but people could write about this if they want to. I think the Drupal book module would be perfect for this regardless of how we do it unless we actually want to make a print book, in which case we should probably convert it to LaTeX as well. There are a few general development models (permissions schemes) we could take:
  • Pure wiki - everyone in the project can edit anything
  • People can only edit their own pages
  • People can edit only their own pages and the structure pages--perhaps introductions and factual pages
  • Some hierarchy that combines the three above ideas[/list:u]The Drupal book module can do all of these. Also, it supports an edit history, so vandalism and mistakes can be reverted.

The other option, of course, is to write it all in LaTeX and have one person compile it. That shouldn't be that hard either, but it would be a bit slower.

I don't know Jack about Drupal, but you guys can find the password for the wiki in the Underground forum, so you could use that.

I've written soooo many things about school already, I can pick out a few to include if you guys want it Razz

Sounds good, we should have a chapter for every active member.

Nah, alphebetical sounds good.

I don't believe that it has to be about negative feelings on school.
I'm hooked on this project already, I believe that this is just what SS needs to gain a little more popularity. Biggrin

How about instead of Bio's, we put quotes that user has said.

Like for example..

"I DO have the self-disipline to get over my own goddamn problems. I don't need some ignorant, arrogent fuck to tell me how I feel and how "damaged" I am. And I especially don't need them to tell me that their the ones that control me and fix my problems." - LittleFreak14 (or real name.)

Don't get it published, people...
That would be stupid.

It would be better to have a collection of stories and Bio's from you guys to put in a book. But not published.

for those who dont know what those chicken soup for the soul books are, they are ussualy filled with 30-50, 5-15 page short stories.

One will be a kid who overcomes peer pressure then another about a kid following his pation of dancing over football or whatever it is.....but its always a cheerful or inquisitive ending, when the person learns something about human nature as a whole.

If somone on this forum would be not lazy enough to make a realy nice set guideline to this project im sure we could do something similar eccept speaking of course in a more dark and sinister manor.

Well, not so much as all of that. I'm writing a proposal for a book about school policy. And I posted some shit for you all a while back that I wrote. Hmm... let me see... gimme an email and I'll send it to you. It's academic so maybe not your bag, but I'm really trying to get more from you folks to make it better.

Know what?
Fuck it.
I'm seeing this as irony too.
Didn't school educate you on how to format a book?
Or maybe you taught yourself.
Or maybe you were born with it.

If this actually goes through, I'll write in it.
But only because I want to bash the idea and still contribute to it at the same time. Smile

Could have learned it somewhere else, without having to worry about all that grade crap if you don't do it right.

It's like that argument about "If you didn't go to school, how could you read and write?" Your parents would probably have to teach you, or you'd just find out somewhere else.

Amen.
*High five*

He's right. You don't need school to know and learn how to live life, because it is not the key. Knowledge is, and in order to learn how to live life, you need to live it. School can't teach you everything.

Spambot Kill Counter as Spambot Hell's Devil: Countless

Buying a high powered computer: 500 bucks
Getting gift wrap: 10 bucks maybe
Seeing the horror on that special someone's face once they tear off the gift wrap and see a Windows 98: Priceless.

Fuck it.
I'm seeing this as irony too.
Didn't school educate you on how to format a book?

Could have learned it somewhere else, without having to worry about all that grade crap if you don't do it right.

It's like that argument about "If you didn't go to school, how could you read and write?" Your parents would probably have to teach you, or you'd just find out somewhere else.
Amen.

He's right. You don't need school to know and learn how to live life, because it is not the key. Knowledge is, and in order to learn how to live life, you need to live it. School can't teach you everything.

I'd be surprised if school can teach ANYTHING right, seeing how high the illiteracy rate is nowadays.
