RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017
The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.
If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.
To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.
I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.
I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.
I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.
I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.
Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.
Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

Basically this douche bag senator posted a youtube video that got like 150 views. The video basically tried to tell parents how to search their kids rooms for drugs, weapons and shit like that. They got the president of NYRA into a debate with the fag, and here's the video:
How about, instead of alienating your children and being an overbearing presence upon them, you learn to actually be a parent and develop a healthy, open relationship where there are no secrets?
Too much to ask of an irresponsible adult on a power trip over their kids I suppose.
"My house, my rules." This argument basically means that, since we are forced to live with them, the intend to abuse the privilege and can do (and make us do) whatever they want.
"You're just a kid and I'm an adult. I know better than you about these things." This means that they have no valid reason for them having the full control over our lives that they do now, and are so insecure that a loop of it. It's defending ageism with ageism. They know our arguments are true and right, and have no actual defense against them; they will simply say "my house, my rules" or "I know better because I'm older" because they know they are in the wrong, but are afraid to lose absolute control over us and our lives. They claim to want to help us, but in all reality it's just because they want control, and they want to have authority when they could not earn any elsewhere.
True respect has to be earned. If someone says "respect me! now! do it!", of course I won't respect them. They haven't earned my respect. To demand respect from someone is to show others that you deserve none. Again, a form of compensation for their insecurity.

What parents fail to realize is that the child has no choice in being there. The parents are the ones that had sex, and made the decision to bring a child into this world and subject them to the pains and trials of living... and they act like their kids owe them something.

Yeah, that's some epic fail for senator douchebag. All he's doing is begging the question and assuming that because he's a kid, his points don't matter. I thought the NYRA guy did a good job proving his point.
Nice vid. Quite interesting. Senator dude keeps stressing 'safety', but it's kind of ironic... finding that stuff in your kid's room and removing it doesn't automatically make them 'safe' because if they've got guns and drugs it means you probably fucked up as a parent a long time ago already and they've been doing stuff like that for a long time and will continue to do so even if you raid their stuff in their room. They'll just find better ways of hiding stuff from you.
TBH, pillows and jewelry boxes and book cases aren't even very good hiding places. If I had srs stuff to hide I'd do something better like bury it or hide it under the floor or some shit. Not keep it somewhere obvious like that.
WD Jeffrey for pwning all the arguments made, pity the TV dude kept interrupting you. At least some of the people who sent in text messages at the bottom seemed smart. I liked the one about prison.
Also, if they are hiding guns and drugs from their parents, even if the parents totally flip around and magically become good role models and start listening to their kids, the kids will probably find it really suspicious and still won't trust them anyway, so there really isn't a whole lot of decent options available in an extreme case like that. But of course they would only look at the extreme cases, and people will use that bullshit as an excuse to snoop on their kids over things that aren't even remotely dangerous as well.

You know, I could write a long essay pointing out all the subtle tricks that they used to make it seem as though they were complimenting Nadel while actually belittling him in the audience's eyes, how they blatantly ignored factual evidence, how they manipulated images to create a biased debate environment, or how they framed it as a safety issue instead of a legal rights issue.
I could do that, but it would be pointless. Our side would cheer and their side would ignore me and nothing would change. So instead let's leave it at this:
Students, READ THAT MANUAL. Study it well, and if you have any materials in your room that are illegal for you to own because of your age, hide them in places that it doesn't mention. DO NOT GIVE UP YOUR WEAPONS. The shared attitudes that the government and the media have towards you, the attitude displayed in this video, is the final nail in the coffin of negotiation. They will NEVER see you as human beings and the time may come soon when you need those concealed guns to protect your human rights from the people who say they represent your safety. So I say again: don't pick a fight, don't do anything stupid, but DO NOT LET THEM CONFISCATE YOUR WEAPONS.
I think Buenaventura Durruti is a pretty cool guy. eh kills fascists and doesnt afraid of ruins. The quickest way to kill a revolution is to wait for it.
You know, our 2nd and 4th Amendment rights are completely ignored and are overruled by certain laws. How can it be that laws can override the Constitutional rights of all US citizens? Why is there an exception for us? We are not "duly convicted" of any crimes, therefore they are out of the right to challenge us.
Not saying deadly weapons are good, but just pointing out the unlawfulness of the law.
The senator is like, they could hide A GUN in this jewelry box.
Well you could be hiding a penis in your pants but it's obvious you're not.

Again, I agree with you. School does teach you things. And once again, you are missing the point entirely. It's not that I disagree with school's mission or the things it teaches. What I object to is that the students are deprived of any choice in the matter. As benign as the intentions may be, any system that forces people into an environment where they have no say in their lives is a situation ripe for abuse of power.

Jeff was amazing! You can tell especially since the idiot senator at the end there had to resort to "I'm an adult!" bullshit. I facepalmed hard at that one.
Did you guys see this past week when he was on that show again, debating the same host and some asshole retired police chief encouraging parents to steal kids' Facebook passwords?

Yeah, Jeff was awesome. He didn't slip up and he used logical and convincing arguments. I saw this week, and I thought it was kind of ridiculous. They only let Jeff say one sentence.

Not even one sentence. The guy hosting the program behaved more like Bill O'Reilly than... whoever he was, being flat-out biased towards the other side and cutting off people who actually counter his arguments.
Though I suppose pointing out the above won't really get anything done, I had to do so.

I've seen so much shit done to youth and for some reason, this has made me angrier than I've felt in years. Abuse and oppression happens all over the world. It's a terrible reality of modern society, but we've all accepted that it happens and we're doing what we can to fight it and build a better world.
But this...this mindless, condescending disrespect toward people who have no legal voice with which to defend themselves, this reduction of parents' betrayal into a cheap crack about kids being computer-savvy...it's like watching a surgeon joke about life insurance while his patient bleeds to death on the operating table. The media's job is to protect society from oppression and they've drawn a clear line between the people worth protecting and the people that don't matter. How can they people sleep at night?

People like this chump get angry because in this society an adult is a small piece of a representation of authority and it scares them that they are so old and weakened while a child will eventually surpass them. Heck they even have a definition for when a child kills their parent and its viewed as one of the worse crimes someone can do because it represents a child defying and over passing that authority.
What parents fail to realize is that the child has no choice in being there. oh and also No one has any rights. We're free, rights create invisible restrictions. But we live in a society where the majority accepts rights to be true.
