RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

You don't need school. Doc says that they'll tax the fuck out of you, but like I said before: "School isn't the key to life. Knowledge is. In order to know and learn how to live life, you need to live it." This could work for jobs too.

my uncle dropped out and it looks like he is more "successful" than my family is. my mother says though that he had to work hard to get where he is and if he wasn't a good talker, then he wouldn't be where he is now. so yes it is possible to get a good job, but just be prepared to work a lot harder, and to prove that you aren't an idiot. most people will think you are because of your lack of diploma (i'm not saying they are right though.) it's much easier for people with their pieces of paper, to get jobs because people believe the paper they give you in high school makes you better than everyone who doesn't.

I'm not even out of high school and I have a job... I understand what you mean though. Society feels, rightly so, that most people who educate themself after high school are generally skillful and intelligent. Some jobs require certain education but most of the time an employer will hire someone if they have the education without a degree so long as the person can show their skills and knowledge.

You still can go to college without a high school diploma or GED. Some require it others do not.

if you are attached to fancy material possession, then yes you are. but really, it doesn't seem to take that good of a job just to get by in this world. i bet everyone is scared of living after school. and they probably should be. it's a fucked up world, but try not to get so wound up in the rat race that you lose sight of what is important : happiness.

guitarniac, you should read this page: Nobel Prize Winners Who Hated School

Quote:if i dont do well enough in school i will never get a good job

For the most part, you only need to pass. Most people will never care how well you actually did. Well, they might "care", but it won't affect anything (there are some university courses that require higher marks in certain subjects though, but that will depend on what you want to do. If it comes down to it, you could always redo that subject on its own later).

If you fail at life it will be because of stupidity not lack of education.

I know what you mean exactly...I have a feeling my 2.4 GPA isnt realy going to help me get into the greatest school in the world. But It looks like if you go to a community college for two years and then transpher to a normal college it takes the same time and you save 30k in your pocket...

College isnt the only way to get anywhere in the world...I can already tell that im going to be playing with the stock market alot in my lifetime.

good for you. it's getting rarer and rarer that people are content with the simple things in life. today, it seems like only the new plasma television will make you acceptable and more of a person ( not too mention how it will distract you from the fact that you need an expensive tv to make your life seem meaningful)

living on a boat eh? that sounds cool. i've always wondered what it'd be like to live out in the ocean or something like that. as for your parents, i'm sure they are like mine and just trying to get you to do well in school. they always threaten me with the failsafe "you don't want to end up with a job flipping burgers and asking, 'do you want fries with that?'
