RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

Music is the great communicator between people because we all love at least one type of it...my question is...what exactly puts the hip in your hop specificly?

Some cupid kills with arrows, some with traps.

A lot of stuff for different bands.

Catchy and clever lyrics? Alkaline Trio.
Guitar? Oh-ho-ho, that's coheed, dragonforce, and turbonegro.
Meaningful lyrics? Alkaline and Coheed.
Somthing you can dance to? Pretty much everything, if you headbang. Biggrin
Hillarious lyrics? Weird Al and Richard Cheese.

I like the music as long as it sounds kickass, like the music in the first level of Doom, and the updated version when Metallica stole it.

Hmmmmmmmmmmm.......

Well my favorite song of all time ever is A Favor House Atlantic By Coheed. No matter how many times I hear that song, it rocks just as much as when I first heard it.

For a song, I just look for any one of them I guess. Razz

My fave is "Dream On" by Aerosmith. Can't get enough of it either.

Meaningful lyrics FTW Smile

All the others are good too, but I've found that even if a song sounds totally kickass, I'd still prefer another song with more meaningful lyrics, even if it doesn't sound as good.

The best songs have good lyrics and good music. Good lyrics are meaningful or humorous, or both. Good music does not necessarily have a catchy beat but has hooks and matches the lyrical content. Having a guitar solo is cool but like the rest of the stuff in the poll the goodness depends on the interaction between elements; the most kick ass guitar solo could make a song sound like crap if the rest of the song is minimalist electronica.

A few of my favourite songs are:
  • Mr. Tambourine Man - Bob Dylan ("Hey, Mr. Tambourine Man, play a song for me")
  • London Calling - The Clash ("The ice age is coming, the sun's zooming in...")
  • That's The Way Life Goes - Desmond Dekker ("That's the way life goes, tomorrow one never knows")
  • Farewell, Farewell - Fairport Convention ("Farewell, farewell to you who would hear / You lonely travellers all / The cold north wind will blow again / The winding road does call" )
  • Too Many Jethro Tull songs to list
  • Venus In Furs - The Velvet Underground ("Taste the whip, now bleed for me"... I seem to have a thing for songs related to kinkiness.)[/list:u]

I said "Catchy Beats" because I tend to value songs that are more instrumental than vocal, and being a good musician doesn't just mean being able to play a kickass guitar solo.

Any music that will appeal to my tastes is good to me.
But I still respect all other forms of music and genres.
