To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

How do you deal with snow days? Or, for those playing in snowless cities, any kind of unplanned interruption?

We had a snow day this week, as I mentioned, and I decided to try to keep the class conversation going. My hybrid course, which meets 2 hours / week in person and the rest of the time online, was scheduled for an in-person meeting; instead, I rejigged the lecture for an online discussion and required everyone to participate to get that week’s attendance checkmark. I would say about 65% of students checked in and engaged, and another 5% or so checked in on a superficial level. That’s not awful, but it’s not great either, especially given that the course is supposed to be half online and students should be engaging with that space.

(I’ll save my hybrid course challenges for another post. I love teaching online, but I’m finding that the biggest challenge is that not all my students want to be taking a course with an online component. Only half of them realized they had signed up for a hybrid course at all.)

In my two regular inside-the-classroom-walls classes, I sent an email out asking students to go over the lecture slides and readings and complete the in-class assignment they would have done had class met as a homework assignment instead. I’m wondering how many of these I will actually get on Monday. I’m planning to use them for a peer learning exercise, but with the awareness that this could all come unravelled in short order.

My students seemed pretty annoyed that I had snow day expectations of them, but losing a whole day of instructional time just seemed impossible. So I ask the many more experienced instructors who read this blog: what are your expectations on days when class in unexpectedly interrupted? Am I being woefully optimistic?

I’ll let you know how things shake out on Monday.

We have yet to get a single flack of snow here since LAST winter, supposed to snow on friday, but it was supposed to snow a few weeks back too.

It's a fucking snowstorm outside. I can't see past my driveway. It's like I'm in Russia or something. School has been cancelled tomorrow, so I'm grateful for that, but my internet is dying due to the snow.

My university got cancelled two days in a row.

Upside: no classes.

Downside: getting together with this really fun girl is probably getting delayed due to the ridiculous snow.

Other upside: WHOO!!!!! Drifting in my truck is so much fun.
