RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

Chuck Palahniuk Book Signing

The Rant tour of 2007, San Francisco. The tales of people fainting at the readings are actually true. Now it may have been because of the heat and the crowd, or it could be because of Chuck's circusfreak story, but some guy fainted right at my heels. I don't know if fainted is the right term. He resembled a corpse more than my Grandfather at his wake and his eyes were wide open, he wasn't breathing and his lips turned the color of his cornflower blue shirt. He came back around after a while but we had to put an end to the gruesome readings. Which put me beyond disappointment.

I won an inflatable moosehead for answering trivia, so I have this great plastic wall mount blown up by Chuck himself. Signed by him too. If that's not cool, I don't know what is.

All the books signed too.

It's unfortunate though, I have to say. I can't seem to digest Rant in one reading at all. I was okay all up until the last sixth of the book and Chuck just had to go and throw time travel in the mix. And the whole thing's an oral biography from different perspectives that are contradicting each other anyway.

Let's do the time warp again!

No lie.

There was also him pointing and saying, "In the way back, the girl with the glasses."

Damnit, I was at borders the other day, and I couldn't remember his last name.
So I had to settle for a book by someone else. D:

"If the doors of perception were cleansed everything would appear to man as it is, infinite. For man has closed himself up, till he sees through narrow chinks of his cavern."

God I fucking love borders.
I got like 60 bucks worth of books when I went to Madison.
But I also got an art discount thing, and they were all in the section were the prices were marked down, so I got about 15 books.

Paula + Nick.

First Question of the FAQ Wrote:PAUL-AH-NIK (Paula Nick). The story goes that Chuck's Grandparents decided to pronounce their name as a combination on their two first names, Paula and Nick. As Chuck relates it: "So many Palahniuk's drop letters from the name. We kept all the letter's but we probably say it the worst.". The 'Old World' pronunciation is PAH-la-NYOOK

That helped. I thought it was Paul-ah-nuke.

Spambot Kill Counter as Spambot Hell's Devil: Countless

Buying a high powered computer: 500 bucks
Getting gift wrap: 10 bucks maybe
Seeing the horror on that special someone's face once they tear off the gift wrap and see a Windows 98: Priceless.

Embarrassed

I didn't scream but I did go into shock a little while he was signing all my books. You'd think that leave for some good conversation time but I just stood there frozen and said he had nice handwriting.

No screaming, but more of a fangirl case than I like to admit.

Shh
