RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

Yeah, it was hard for me too. It's like trying to go to the gym. You have to find what responds to you. For some people, if they just learn a buncha songs they get really good.

I say study scales, appregios, and chord progression.

Theres actually a decent thing by Steve Vai called the "10 hour workout" where he explains how he got so damn good. It's this huge set of exersizes. If you want me to scan that from the magazine, I can.

Please and thank you?

Most of the shit I learn are from books at the library. And since the internet connection thing, its been really easy. Cause now I can get books from all around the county.
There's actually one book from the library that has like 101 rock chord progressions.
And I know a bit about the blues, but the REALLY hardest thing to do is find some fun song to play.

Its such a bitch finding good licks and riffs.

I can only play up to medium on guitar hero.

That is all i have even done with a guitar.

I highly suggest Mobb Deep's albums The Infamous and Hell on Earth, if you have not listened to it yet.

Darthmat, that's not a guitar, it's a hunk of plastic compatible with the PS2.

And has four rectangular buttons that are color-coded.

Even if its not a guitar, its still a pretty good game. Nice soundtrack.

Anyways, if I ever decide to play a gitar, Id play a bass. i like the supportive backround things bass's do.

I played bass for a while wanting to play Primus songs thinking they were easy and fun. Bass is a challenging insturment for sure. Though I'm pretty idle with it now.

Id rather do it when I have my own money. That way I can learn on my own pace. As some people do already. I know it may be difficult, but I tihnk it'll be fun.

How about "Why did you learn guitar?"

I started practicing because I had an acoustic in my room since forever... and then I was like "what the hell, I like music"
I did the same thing with a keyboard, cept I still really suck at the keyboard, and I can't find any music.

Oh, and thanks Zappa, for the link.

I decided I wanted to learn to play after becoming a music nut and realized it would be a fun job. I was really inspired into guitar by Allan Holdsworth, Frank Zappa, and Tony Iommi, three peolpe who managed such a distinctive sound.

Go buy yourself a metronome and start practicing scales with it. It may seem really boring, but it will help you a lot in the long run.

http://www.all-guitar-chords.com/guitar_scales.php is a good site for learning your scales.

Kirby Wrote:Start by learning the blues.

The 12 bar blues are really simple and great fun to jam along with. http://www.guitarnoise.com/article.php?id=486 is a nice little introduction to improvisation and it even has a few midi backing tracks to mess around with.

I have a keyboard, that has a metronome. And I don't need one, I've learn a couple instuments formally so I know how to keep time.
I was actually looking for scales for the guitar... or was that the clarinet?

And I already know the 12 bar blues.

The metronome is there to tighten up your performing or to help you play a something new.

Yeah, if you can keep town, great, but theres always room for improvement. Bass Guitar, I find, is the best combination of sound, rhythym, melody, and theory. thats a good starting insturment.

I'd pwn you at blues and classical.
Metal riffs 90% suck because band are more obsessed with their death grunts and not their rhythms. And the great metal bands only focused on their solos, so the harmony part (which makes 95% of the song) is complete shit.

And Darthmat, go to heeeell. I've played long enough to have a fucking metronome in my HEAD. I can tell the tempo of any song, if its moderato adante etc. And I can keep my own fucking time thank you. Especially on an instrument as easy as the guitar.

I hate scales by the way. Although any good guitar play needs to memorize their fret board, especially if its a blues/rock/or metal guitarist. (So the can do improv)

Guitar is fucking easy to learn D:
Its such a basic fucking concept. You look at the TAB (which is soooo cheating musically) and you line your finger up with the string and you then line it up with the fret number and then you pluck.
My god D:< You don't even have to worry about tuning D:<
