RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

Guitar Thread

Nobodie's Really Posted about guitar, have they? Well, maybe cradle about 2 years ago, but whatever.

I've been teaching myself guitar for maybe 7 months now and I'm pretty good at it. It's just that my guitar is from Wal-Mart and I have no distortion pedal for that really nice sound. =/

I, myself, have a walmart guitar. It's not REALLY from walmart, but it's essentially the same.

I've been teaching myself for about a month. I'm not so good.

Well I play violin, and viola, and a litle bit of bass, so theres plenty of callus.
And also I started practicing on my spanish acoustic like 6 months before I got my electric guitar.
I got nowhere fast, it was hard as fuck cause the acoustic is sooo much bigger then my ibanez.

Laugh Laugh

I've also got a cheap acoustic guitar, which is probably horribly out of tune by now because I haven't attempted to play it in ages... which is sad, because I wish I could play, it's just that there isn't really much point in doing so Razz

I've played guitar for about a year now.
I'm pretty good at it too, everyone that has heard me play asks me if I've played for 3. Razz

I have an RG series Ibanez...

I don't really like learning songs made by other people....It's kind of lame when people come up to me and ask "what can you play" or "what song is that from"
It's a little annoying, too.

Huh, I thought you said african. Oh well...
Hey I get to play guitar for Santana's Port of Freedom for my orchestra when we go to the Mall of America on monday.
The music is really easy its a mix of the melody and the rhythm, and I only play three chord (a lot throughout the music) The chords are Amin7, D7, and E7. Then the melody is fun.
And yaaaaaay. I'm like half way through level 4 and Mrs. Becker (Orch. teacher) has never taught anyone thats gotten to level four, especially one that started in 6th grade.

I play with an Ibanez JEM. Used to use a Gibson SG, before that Les Paul, before that Squire Stratocaster.

I started taking lessons last fall, but I didn't progress until Spring time hit, and I realized that the idea of a teacher is more or less to show you form and guide you along the way. So I began practicing a few hours a day, and now its up to 6-12 depending on the day and whether I feel like playing.

that's not a bad idea, learn blues or folk, but blues is harder, you have to realize that. if you can master blues though you can play a lot of things.

12 bar blues is the simplest thing you can learn and it sounds good.

Some types of blues like country blues are harder than others but the basics of blues is pretty simple. 12 bar blues is pretty much the simplest chord progression in music.
