RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

The forums are mostly read-only and are in a maintenance/testing phase, before being permanently archived. Please use this time to get the contact details of people you'd like to keep in touch with. My contact details are here.

Please do not make a mirror copy of the forums in their current state - things will still change, and some people have requested to be able to edit or delete some of their personal info.

i feel like it will never end

HI ppl
Sometimes I feel like school will never end.
But then when the weekend comes along I always want to go back to school.
I don't like the learning part of school. Just some of the teachers and some of the students.
See I do not live around any students my age. That makes me want to go to school a little more.
Then I don't have any time to talk any of my friends. I have guidence at luncj or I am in a pissed off mood.
I have Health class right before lunch and I only have 2 friends there. One of them is a boy who still thinks that I like him.
The other is a girl who is all emo and stuff.
So it's like I have no one to talk to anyway.
I have chorus during my tasc period and we are not allowed to talk during chorus.
During homeroom is the only time I can ever get to talk to my friends.
I have 5 friends in my homeroom of 25.
The others all shun me.
Our homeroom is only 10 minutes long so not much time for talking.
Alot of the time I just wish that I could just vanish off of the face of this planet.
Do you think that it is normal to wish that?
~the class weirdo~ No

Hi! Smile

I feel like that sometimes. I have a few friends but I'm not that close to any of them. Just find something else to keep you busy during class. Bring a book or something interesting to do.

Yeah alot of people feel that way tword classes.
I can't really talk or pass notes in my classes.
If I do then I will get in trouble and get moved next to the podeum in the front of the class where everybody is watching you. Even the boy who I like. Uhoh Yeah you don't want that to happen.
I don't really like books any more. They hurt my brain. Biggrin

It'll end eventually... can't you like, see your friends after school? Or are they a bit too far away?

Like i sometimes wish it would end and sometimes not.
All of my after school activities have ended bacasue of the end of the year.
They live like about 5 miles away and i'm not allowed to walk on the ighway to get there.
My crazy uncle would never drive me becasue he doesn't want me to have anything that is somewhat fun.
Except play the French Horn. Summer lessons for that will be great. Biggrin
Well none of my friends play the French horn so i most likely won't see them at the school this summer.

I often feel a lot like that. My situation is probably not nearly so bad as yours, but I still don't feel like I have any friends--I just have acquantences. Most people act friendly around each other, but nobody is actually remotely like me.

I just read during all my classes except when I think teachers may catch me. Maybe you can think of something to do or think about so the class passes more easily.

You should also consider why other people "shun" you. Even if it doesn't lead you to change your behavior, it's interesting to think about.

I feel like that too. The school year went by fast, but now that there's only 9 school days left, it felt like it's been taking forever.

What your post brings to mind is that schools are networks and meant to be so. Sometimes the friendships, or what we believe to be friendships that are formed, are networks and leave us with an emptiness when outside of them.

John Taylor Gatto:
"Children and old people are penned up and locked away from the business of the world to a degree without precedent; nobody talks to them anymore, and without children and old people mixing in daily life; a community has no future and no past, only a continuous present. In fact the name "community" hardly applies to the way we interact with each other. We live in networks, not communities, and everyone I know is lonely because of that. "

Just something to mull over....

Yes it is. I am still not out of school! I have until June 15th.
Why don't you get a tutor if you are failing?

I don't know whether tutors will actually help people like us; I think that those of us who are doing badly in school simply can't get themselves to do the work. We can explain why we feel like this, but the point is that we, at some deep level, just find it incredibly boring or painful. It's easy to learn things that interest you.

this is, in my opinion, another way that schools are evil. if we are failing, we don't get "why?", we get "get a tutor". the psychological nuance of this is that you'll have to do MORE work and waste MORE time, and it's also intimidating.

Well. hmmmm how to answer this one....
Ok if you need to find something that interests you then, when you get into highschool, take classes that are not intiminating and that do have some meaning to you.
If you are not in high school then find someone that you can feel motivated around.

Exactly. I stopped giving a damn about science and maths at school (too damn repetitive), and my grades dropped significantly. Then my dad (who likes science and maths a lot), made me do all this extra stuff in the holidays to "get better" at it. Which made me even less interested... aaaand you can see where this is going Smile

Yea. Science and Math are my best subjects becuase I have great teachers who understand how much we all hate school bacuase they are fresh outa college. Now English on the other hand is so boring my evil teacher had to throw one of those dry board earasers at me becuase I fell asleep. My motivation to pass that class is that I want to get into French next year. Think of it this way. If you don't pass the class you will have to take it over and over until you pass it. Why waste all that presios time that you could be doing with sports and stuff.

My dad does that, too. Once he tried to change the way I hold a pencil. He made me write a 1 page paper on some dinosaur book. And if he saw me not holding the pencil like he wanted me to, I would have to start over.

I have found some things that interest me, and some of them I found through interesting classes, but most people aren't allowed to take good classes--they're required to take academics and just have one or two slots left afterwards, which normally gets filled by something else they're expected to take.

Well after school activities are fun.
They can take up all the boring time that you just sit there and do nothing and they look really good on your college reume.
There is something out there for all of us.
Oh and to solve the problem of no slots left, just pass all the acidemic classes first.
Silly people.

Well, it's not so bad that he's trying to teach you how to write properly; school doesn't do a very good job at that. (I read that on some calligraphy or handwriting site, but I can't find it right now.)

I just don't think it's very smart to try to reverse something as trivial as how I've been holding a pencil. There are bigger problems.

Yes, there is something for all of us, but the point is that "after school activities" are just that , after school. That just promotes further the idea that learning only takes place in school. Learning takes place in life.

Yes but it gives you something to look forward to.
You learn wether or not you are school. New music. You learn about that. You learn what Brad Pitt is doing that exact second(No I hate Brad Pitt. He is just an example.) Learning you think is not fun but sometimes it is
