RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

The forums are mostly read-only and are in a maintenance/testing phase, before being permanently archived. Please use this time to get the contact details of people you'd like to keep in touch with. My contact details are here.

Please do not make a mirror copy of the forums in their current state - things will still change, and some people have requested to be able to edit or delete some of their personal info.

That depends on your definitions of "adult" and "success" Biggrin

I'm not an adult! I swear!

1) The difference between adults and children should be based on the maturity necessary for that dividing line in society. In other words, not a razor-edge line but dependent on the individual. There are people who though they are in their 20s are very immature and should not be heavily relied upon. There are also people who are in their teens who I would vote for if I believed in voting.

2) I am 17 and I firmly believe I am as capable as any 18+ year old. I may not have as much "life experience" as adults but neither do 18 year olds. I have a job and I am earning my own money (though it pays too little), I have plans for my future (though they could change), and I take full responsibility of my actions. I have found that honesty is much better than lying, even to teachers. Instead of making up an oft-heard excuse I tell the full truth and show that nothing that school can do to me will ever stop me from living my own life.

3) I don't hate any of the subjects I am taking, I am against the present school system because it is legally and socially mandatory and it is not designed to promote free thinking and genuine freedom of learning. I say legally and socially because I am legally able to drop out of school but social sanctions are present.

4) Math is awesome.

I don't know. I'm an adult. Just barely. And I guess I'm as sucessfull as anyone else my age. Maybe slightly more so. I don't know.

What does it matter?

Let's do the time warp again!

We don't all bitch on this site about school I mean its good to get the pain of school out and share among others who have felt its sting but we talk about other things. Just because we talk bad about school does not mean we don't have lives or plans for the future and like kirby said age does not mean maturity and success is how you feel about your life not by how happy your family is for your career, how rich you are or that shit. Damn where did this life talk come from.

Yeah, I guess I'm fairly successful (finally). It was a longish time coming. 38 years old. College professor. I'm sure others on this site could tell you more.

im just curious because i want this site to have some legitimacy, so it can grow into something more than just us bitching about stupid shit. I think if we had some accomplished people on here it would give us a better stance against others.

True. That might make the "others" listen to us. But maybe it's the "other" people's whole notion of what makes someone "accomplished" that is part of the problem in the first place...

Yes, I am an adult.
Yes, I am fairly successful (Manager of finance and litigations for Derbex Industries, California)
I hated school, and I look at the school System today and am disgusted by it. I am fully aware of all the problems that perfectly normal people have with the "educational system" not just here, but everywhere around the world. I used to live in the UK, it's exactly the same there, and let me tell you, it's no different than it was 20 years ago. So, I'm on your side. Please don't think that because I'm old and am not in full time education anymore that I'm out of touch. I'm a Governor at the school that my kids go to, and frequently observe lessons without the teacher knowing, and see things which the Government would rather have not have us see.
