RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

The forums are mostly read-only and are in a maintenance/testing phase, before being permanently archived. Please use this time to get the contact details of people you'd like to keep in touch with. My contact details are here.

Please do not make a mirror copy of the forums in their current state - things will still change, and some people have requested to be able to edit or delete some of their personal info.

I read it... all girls school eh? That's horrible... I mean, if you never hang out with guys, you'll be kinda awkward around them. At least, that's what happened in my case. Until I started going to LANs, now I can't really get along with most girls anymore (not that I ever really could in the first place)... Laugh

And yeah, that uniform and individuality contradiction was all over the private school I was at as well. They contradicted themselves so many times in that place it wasn't even funny anymore... Rolleyes

I'm not surprised that being in a place like that turned you off religion... most religious people turn me off 'religion'. But all those little morning prayers and other habits don't really mean anything in the long run, so don't let 'em ruin it... what I mean is, make up your own mind what you believe, nevermind what anyone else tells you you should believe. Even if it has a few things in common with the annoying people's beliefs Razz

Thought I'd be nice and ordered in my reply.
1. The ‘all girls’ rule
I'm not sure whether or not i agree with this one- I go to an all boys school, and I don't think I would like all the popularity contests that might ensue if it was a mixed school, and I imagine it would be more likely to find a boy with similiar interests to me than a girl. On the other hand, it does seperate girls and boys, which inevitably creates prejudices and untruths.
2. The Catholic Religion
Yeah, I totally agree with this one. My school also has prayers and bible readings, but only once a week. Interestingly, recently they've stopped saying "Bow your heads to pray" and replaced it with "Bow your heads to pray or to reflect" Which is a bit futile, because the next words are inexorably "Dear Lord"
3. Me being very different
Ironically enough, I also experience this Razz . I am lucky enough to know one person who shares my approximate musical interests (Japanese music(Everyone Else seems to either be into the charts (ugh) or muse (okay, but obviously didn't spend much time looking for something which spoke to them (sort of as a background music, rather than something to think about (Perhaps that's just me being an INTP (confused?)) )), but I stil feel really different. There's no way I could imagine me having any intelligent conversation with anyone. I remember in year 8 trying to explain to someone sitting next to me that java applets are slow, and that flash is limited, nothing difficult. So someone i knew quite well sitting next to me obviously overheard, called me a geek and wouldn't talk to me for the rest of the day. Wtf They almost certainly anarchy means unbridled chaos. I swear, if I let slip i knew the difference between a fermion and a boson, everyone in earshot would have a brain haemorrhage.
4. Uniform (pics)
Although, being a boy, I can't sympathize about the ugliness of the uniform, I really see the irony in the "Individual development" thing your school seems proud of. Schools are the last place to get individual development. Assignments are rigid, and there's very little opportunity to show creativity or learn what you want to learn. I wonder if your headmaster/headmistress honestly believes s/he is providing individual development, or whether it is just something nice to put on the brochures...
5. Others.
The books thing annoys me too, particularly Shakespeare. We studied "Much ado about Nothing" to death, and I could never see myself willingly reading/watching Shakespeare. Watched Hamlet and loved it. I've had similiar experiences with maths, science, PE, writing and poems. School so completely destroys love of learning it's scary.

I guess, in summary, you're far from alone in your problems.

Intelligent conversation is rare. Maybe it has something to do with the fact that the IN** personalities together only count for about 5% of the human population... I know a couple of them IRL, and it seems hordes of them end up on these forums for some reason Cool

It's not just the personality thing though. Anyone who would just use their brain for more than 5 minutes a day might become intelligent enough to come up with some ideas and actually have something to talk about. It just seems that introvert people are more likely to do that...

I think INxx are more likely to question norms, have a will and a want to learn and (INxPs especially) have a desire for freedom. They probably also don't care too much about school being good for easy social encounters. On the same note, they are probably more likely to be isolated/bullied and thus have a worse hatred of school. In any case, it's good to find another MBTI user.

There was a whole thread about the MBTI thing a while back... It is interesting, all this MBTI stuff, just be careful not to pre-judge people too much based on their personality type though Smile

I'm INFP, btw. But the other day I took the test again and it said I was INFJ... I guess that makes me a hybrid now Razz

the thing is, im trying to get out of that school and go to a new one. I seriously hate it. Most of it is just the fact that i am around idiots all day. Well, most of the people there are idiots, its hard to explain, this is because being in an all girl environment just takes their girliyness and multiplies it by ten.

THe kind of person i am is the kind of person who likes to run around, start flash mobs, not talk about how much i 'love' guys, or how much guys are 'hot', but id rather talk about different things.

I know that i would probably find girls like that in co-ed schools, but then there would also be guys, (which i now not much about) but im sure some of them would like Punk or Ska music, and im definately sure that they would be into metal music.

Flash mobs? What's that?

The girls at my school were always gossiping and talking about "hot" guys as well. Which is pretty much why I always just sat there and said nothing Razz

I suppose most guys are stoopid as well, just in different ways. Like, they talk about "hot" girls and... cars? Laugh

flash mobs, i think the people of this site would love a flash mob...

A flash mob is a group of people who assemble suddenly in a public place, do something unusual or notable, and then disperse. They are usually organized with the help of the Internet or other digital communications networks.

I think most schools suck as much as yours. I'm using your numbers.
  1. Does separation by sex feel the same as separation by age (grade)?
  2. School itself is a religion. Read some of John Taylor Gatto's stuff.
  3. I think I feel exactly like you about being different, just not in music. I'm sure you can find some people who are remotely similar though.
  4. All schools say the same bullshit. Also, at my schools the teachers always contradicted the administration.
  5. The others are quite similar to mine, and I completely understand how they are much more than stupid little things about which you shouldn't care. Have you considered lying down instead of sitting? It's better for your back.

Flah mobs.... now those can be fun/dangerous. On the last day of school for the seniors my freshman year, the senoirs gathered at the main hallway juction. Then somone in the center yells "HALLWAY MOSH PIT!" So we have a wall of seniors just sprinting down the hallway hitting/knockingover EVERYTHING. It only lasted mabey a minute or so as they reached the end of the hall they ran through the doors. It happened so fast that administration had no time to react except fot the vice prinicipal who is in the parking. So they come racing out and he see them and just starts flipping a shit. I mean he was bursting at the seams. He starts hopping up and down just screaming at them as they run by and drive out. Its then rumored that as some seniors drove by that one chick flashed him and and yells somthing at him, it changes from whoever is telling it. Me i personaly think she said TITTIES! but that just me

Whilst some work diligently there are those who ask why. I am one of them

I used to go to an all girls school and I hated it so much. I go to a public school now and...well I wouldn't say I'm happier but there's much more interesting people here. I was the same at the original poster, I was the only person who liked punk and metal, people who claimed to like "punk" were Simple Plan fans. On uniform free days (the few that we had) people would glare at me, not just look at me weird, though they did that as well, the glared at me for dressing different from them. I swear this is true, I was walking across the courtyard place and every person I walked passed glared at me for the way I was dressed.

I got comments from people in my class like "why are you dressed like that?" "you look like a mime" "why don't you dress like everyone else?" just because I was wearing mostly black, I think it's more weird to wear bright green tracksuit pants with a puffy white jacket that only covers half your back (people in Australia will know what I'm talking about). Now at my current school there's more people who dress like me so I don't get as many weird looks but I'm bloody sick of getting called emo all the time, I don't even like emo music. But at least there's cooler people at my new school. Good luck with escaping from there.

PS. I agree about the all girls school thing too, I went to a girls school for almost three years and it seriously stunted my social skills, it took me ages to learn to talk to boys, I've been at my current school for a year now so I've gotten used to it but I used to freak out when boys talked to me. I still see people from old school at the train station and I just laugh at them, they all bunch up and start giggling when a boy comes near them, dumbarses.
