RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

My school's scheduling works like this, we have 6 total classes and you have 3 classes a day, each are 1 hour and 40mins long. And on Friday school starts an hour later and you have every class and they're about 50mins long.

I have 8 classes a day, all year the same classes.. all year.
The average person in ninth grade gets 5.5 credits, (We completely decide our schedule (and have to make it fit, which sucks because we get last pick from all other grades D:<(Oh and some people might get into lacrosse roads, which is where all the.... :clear throat: the people with all the remedial classes, my bros in lacrosseroads.) I have 7 credits. Smile
My schedule goes as follows.
(We have like 1/2 and hour in the morning to go to our teachers for help on homework we didnt understand the night before, which is absolutely genius)
So, 1st hour, orchestra
2ed and third- honors world humanities, which is an honors class that is basically history and english, its sapposed to be really hard and LOTS of writing. (My history and lit teacher were kinda afraid of putting me in it, they said I had the ability to pass the class easily, but maybe not the work ethic)
4- science (biology)
5- lunch (Well.... study hall) (there are three lunches, depending on which floor you have your fifth hour, middle lunch (which is the best because theres a LOT less people in it) is when you have study hall fifth hour.
I made my schedule so it would work out, if you just have a study hall you just sit in a class quietlydoing your work, but if I have it 5th hour I can go where ever I want(Library), eat lunch, and do my work. I have an hour to do so. Lunch is usually only 20 minutes and usually you can only go to the library before/after school. and the have a beautiful library that has two floors, a first for me (my point, library=big) and this school district is pretty libreral so the book choice shouldnt be just pg.
6-math (algebra 1)
7- french (i'm fucked)
8- art (i was so close to not getting this class, cause there was too many people but they stuck me in there after it was full, THANK GOD)

Thats my schedule all year, this is great, cause I hve art all year and not just semester.
Oh, and no gym.
We need 1 1/2 credits for gym, so three years of gym, I'm not taking gym this year, and for the next three years I'm either doing the essay (if you hve a really active summer you can write an essay and get the credit, or have summer school, because 18 days of gym in the summer is a shitload better then 90 days during the school year.

We have 4 classes each semester. I think they're about 75 minutes each.

Semester One:
Communications
English
Physics
Art

Semester Two:
Chemistry
Tech. Design
Computers

I'm going to get it changed though because I need to take math.

Mon-Thurs, 8 periods each 45 classes start 9:15-4:30 but we have to get there at 8:10 to daven and we have 2 locker breaks, lunch and another davening. Twice a week we have gym that replaces a class.
Friday is from 9:15-1:30. 4 one hour classes (switches each week wat classes) 2 breaks, and 1 lunch.

I highly suggest Mobb Deep's albums The Infamous and Hell on Earth, if you have not listened to it yet.

We don't get our schedules until a week or so before school starts.

We have 7 classes a year on a block schedule. We go to first period every day and it's 45 minutes. Then we go to Second, Fourth, and Sixth (or Third, Fifth and Seventh every-other day) and those are 90 minutes each. Lunch is about a half-hour, and it can happen either after second, during fourth, or after fourth. School starts at 7:20 and lets out at 1:45...we're not allowed to have a study hall unless we're a senior, and most hallways are off-limits during lunch, so if we need to see a teacher we either need to come in early or stay late.

They always manage to screw my schedule up, so I wouldn't be surprised if I got my schedule and it said I was in home economics...and we don't even have a home ec class.

For the end of the year awards assembly they put me in the grade 10 assembly and my awards in the grade 11 assembly. I actually won a medal from a writing contest, too.

So yea, anythings possible.

At my school we have two semesters with five periods a semester (and day). Each period is 75 minutes long. Most grade 9/10s have lunch period 3 and most grade 11/12s have lunch period 4.

To graduate you have to get 30 credits which is made up of about 12 or so mandatory classes and the rest which you choose. You also have to have a non-mandatory class in three groups. For example, one group includes an extra science, technology, or math class.

In the most common circumstances, a student needs to take only 6 classes in grade 12. This means you can get a spare.

We choose the classes we want to take and not in what order. But my schedule, and many other students, had a lot of conflicts in time therefore taking the requested classes would be impossible. Because there were more than one conflict we were allowed to create our own schedule. I set mien up so that I have lunch fourth period and a spare for fifth. That means my school day will end at noon. Yay!

Block scheduling.

4 classes every day, 90 minutes long. Classes switch after a semester and your lunch swaps (A lunch is earlier; right after 2nd block, and B lunch is later, after 3rd block)

I get my schedule on August 16th (school starts on the 20th).

At my school we have 2 semesters and 4 grading points, 2 in each semester.

We have 8 periods, each one about 45 minutes long.

Mine goes as followed:

1st Semester:
1 - General Business
2 - English 2
3 - Integrated Math 2
4-A - Lunch
4-B - Lunch
5-A, B - Biology
6 - Spanish 2
7 - Study Hall
8 - US History

2nd Semester is the same only instead of Gen Bus I have Health. And the classes broken down into A's and B's are I think shorter as they are lunch periods. I think each A and B is 20 minutes long, I'm not sure though. We start school at 7:24AM (ha, they gave us two more minutes from last year) and ends at 2:20PM

The school I'm going to (essentially a hippie school) consists of the following schedule:

12 - 4 PM, all self paced, and you ask questions when the teacher comes in. Math teacher comes in at the start, followed by English, science, and social studies. There are weekly goals set, and you get two grades: Acheived and unacheived. That's about it.
