RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

The forums are mostly read-only and are in a maintenance/testing phase, before being permanently archived. Please use this time to get the contact details of people you'd like to keep in touch with. My contact details are here.

Please do not make a mirror copy of the forums in their current state - things will still change, and some people have requested to be able to edit or delete some of their personal info.

Brainwashing

I wasn't actually set out to call this brainwashing, but now that I think about it that pretty much is a basis for all of it.

Why is the oppressive school system allowed to continue to begin with? Is it because we're stupid? No, we're not stupid. Is it because it's really, REALLY enforced? Noo

Partially, but this only somewhat explains it.

The reason wrong things are brought upon us, not necessarily only by school, but any wrong belief, etc, is because the idiots telling us (I'm in a particularly vindictive mood atm, not all of them are idiots) tell us politely.

If you had somebody shouting at you telling you what to believe, you might be intimidated, but you wouldn't truly believe. But if somebody tells you with a smile it's "for the better good", you're more inclined to believe it.

It shows how evil such techniques are, if they're intentional. They're trying to destroy you by telling you it's okay.

The moral is, think for yourself.

I agree, part of the reason is that people say it with a smile, to decieve you. I also think the problem is people accept things just because others do, they're afraid to be independant and stick out and are more happy with just blending in with the crowd and do as others do. Most people don't like things but because no one else is saying anything outloud, they won't. And if that person stays quiet then another will and another, everyone just waiting for someone else to stand up against what's wrong.

I meet people like John Taylor Gatto halfway. The modern school systems around the world are based off of the Prussian model which was definitely not for the freedom of the people. It was for the benefit of the ruling classes. The school system is still based on the old system but most of the malevolence is gone. Certainly school is used to further the agenda of the government but the people who run schools day to day do care about students. There are many reasons why they accept schools as they are but the fact remains that the conspiracy of the ruling class is much smaller. The problem is that the blueprint is the same.

Well said. One cool point to Kirby.

Indeed... the original design was for brainwashing, but most people now don't know about that, and do actually seem to believe it's for the best.

This is a quote from Emma Goldman's article The Social Importance of the Modern Schools which I can post in it's entirety if you wish.

Emma Goldman Wrote:I do not mean to say that this process is carried on consciously; it is but a part of a system which can maintain itself only through absolute discipline and uniformity

I agree. The education system was originally modeled for a time when many people would work on assembly lines, and have to follow instructions. Unfortunetly, that system has been carried over to today, and is no longer logical.

Re: Brainwashing

Correct me if i'm wrong, whispers, but I believe it's the school system, not the education system.
After all, you can choose to educate yourself however and whenever you want to, but the school system forces (for lack of better word) you to "learn" from "teachers" that go by a certain curriculum that is based off of aforementioned(by Kirby) blueprints.

Way to bump, asshole.
I fail to see anything even close to a rant or a big word in what you just posted.

Also, way to state the obvious.
