RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

The forums are mostly read-only and are in a maintenance/testing phase, before being permanently archived. Please use this time to get the contact details of people you'd like to keep in touch with. My contact details are here.

Please do not make a mirror copy of the forums in their current state - things will still change, and some people have requested to be able to edit or delete some of their personal info.

LGBT In School

I've getting fucking sick of my old school and how they've treated the LGBT youth at my school. Two friends of mine, one who is a Female to male transsexual, and one who is a gay male have been repeatedly been pushed around by the administration.

For starts, my female to male friend. He's seventeen, just finished his junior year, and is a very nice person. Moved to Dallas recently and has been on testosterone a year and a half and you can't tell a damn thing about his biological gender (which he'll change in December of this year when he turns 18 and gets his breasts removed. Well, for starts, the ever so progressive school I go to not only made him publicly disclose his biological gender, they suspended him for several weeks for "cross dressing" and "crossing gender identity roles". After getting back, not only did he lose credit, he became the laughing stock of the school. Sound messed up, eh? Well, in summer school, the math teacher said to him "Admit that you're a fucking dyke", and although he sent in a report weeks ago, nothing has been done to even warn the teacher.

Then lets go to my gay friend for a minute. He's not the brightest guy in the world, and he told someone that gossips to a lot of people. His entire cover got blown, and kids began to harass him. Not harass him like say "Fag!"; I mean actually harass the guy using physical violence. As a result, he was forced to come out to his parents (who are Born again Christians who believe the earth is, oh, God only knows, 5,000 years old?) to explain why he was being beaten up, and he's ended up without much financial support. He got fed up with it, and tried to report it to the schools, but they insisted he had no proof whatsoever and that all this was happening out of school (it wasn't.) Since the entire collapse of his social life and his relationship with his family, he's gone to a "Reparative therapy retreat" for six fucking weeks. He's been so cool about it, but if he cracks, I'm going to be fucking disgusted.

After those two stories, the question is, are your schools tolerant of gays and lesbians? Or are they intolerant like mine?

Damn... I really hope your friend is gonna be OK. That's some really screwed up shit Noo

I can't remember anyone ever being openly gay at any of the schools I was at. People would call the weirdo's "gay" as an insult, that's about all I know of. And someone apparently spread a rumour that I was lesbian. Nobody really did anything though, but it does kinda explain a few weird reactions I got from people which made no sense at the time Razz

Isn't that called metrosexual or something like that? Where you dress and act like a gay but you're straight?

No clue but I had friends who were gay and that old thing about them being feminine is bullshit.

metrosexual- a heterosexual male who has a strong aesthetic sense and inordinate interest in appearance and style, similar to that of homosexual males.

I know someone who lives in Texas, and he frequently talks about how everyone there except him is absurdly conservative, but I didn't realize they could be this crazy. What do their parents think about all this messed-up stuff at school?

That sucks, you should be able to kiss them in public if you wanted. Sadly my friend would be one of those people, he's a homophobe but I'm trying to get him to be less of a dick about it.

It's not overtly conservative. The cities (paticularly Austin) tend towards more liberal/moderate beliefs, but the towns SUCK. I happen to live by the city that was ranked 7th in most conservative, however.

TheATXKiller Wrote:Homophobes annoy me...

A-Men to that. I don't care if someone wants to think being queer is a disease. I know a few that do who I hold respect for because rather than picket, protest, and try to pass legislation in the name of their beliefs, they keep it to themselves and let people live their lives so long as they aren't commiting any real crime.

I'm glad I'm going to a new school because the school I'm going to is 1) a place to get your work done and 2) very anti-discriminatory. People don't suspect me or question my orientation (I'm the opposite of their stereotypical world: I'm a fat slob), but it was paranoia everyday when I did attend.

Haha I'd probably do that but the school I went to is loaded up with cameras, and the cops are there like 24/7. It's a place where I got in trouble for laughing in the middle of class. But hey, its the magnum opus of right winged yuppies whos only concerns in life are getting that job promotion and whether the football team won or lost.

El Paso. I believe it's one of the more liberal towns of Texas, but this city is very heavily Catholic, and of course, Catholics (in general) love persecuting the queers, so even if the political views are more liberal here, it still has a rather conservative view on gays.

What also puts me in a difficult position would be I'm on the football team at my high school, and stereotypically, jocks hate gays with a passion, and the majority of my teammates would definitely fit the jock stereotype, at least that aspect of it. I was considering "coming out," but soon realized I would suffer quite a bit of... "turbulence" if I did, so I'm playing it like R. Kelly and chillin' in the closet for a while, which actually disappoints me because I strongly encourage being yourself no matter who doesn't like it.

Actually, when I was considering "coming out," I asked one of the guys on the team a hypothetical question... "What would you think of a gay guy on the team?"

we have a lot of posters up at school that say things like "we accept all sexualities" and "some people like boys, some people like girls, some people like both" and other nice things like that, they have pictures of rainbows and stuff on them. I know a lot of bisexual people at my school too but no gay people...at my old school (a Catholic all girl's school) we were always being told that homsexuality is a sin and one of my friends got a detention for saying the word "lesbian" because apparently it's a swear word. I'm happy the teachers are more accepting at my new school than at my old school but the students are mostly homophobic.

People were hypocritical at both my schools, at my first school people called me lesbian because I liked to hug my friends a lot but the same people who called me a lesbian used to compare breast sizes, ask people if they'd gotten bigger over the holidays etc. doesn't anyone else find this a bit odd? Now at my new school, there's these three boys in my drama class who always pretend to be gay with each other, like they pretend to kiss each other and pretend to have butt sex with each other and lots of other suss stuff like that (the teachers don't really care about it, only if they're disrupting the class) yet one of the boys called another guy a fag for wearing eyeliner -_-" people are stupid.
