RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

The forums are mostly read-only and are in a maintenance/testing phase, before being permanently archived. Please use this time to get the contact details of people you'd like to keep in touch with. My contact details are here.

Please do not make a mirror copy of the forums in their current state - things will still change, and some people have requested to be able to edit or delete some of their personal info.

this is what my parents are like. they make it seem like they're asking you, when they are really telling you. i wouldn't have a problem most of the time doing what they wanted, if my parents actually asked without thinking that i had to do what they told me. being forced or 'asked' nicely when you really know that they expect you to do it, are the same thing, and that's it's of the only things i can't stand.

no they don't.

I highly suggest Mobb Deep's albums The Infamous and Hell on Earth, if you have not listened to it yet.

Yeah and then when I still say no, she hangs up and calls me all the next day saying how I don't have to go and this and that, while still trying to guilt me into it and then if that fails, she goes back to crying more.

AAAA... people like that are really annoying Brickwall

I don't think they even do it on purpose either. Which makes it even MORE annoying, because you can't just tell them to stop their stupid game... they go all "What game? YOU'RE JUST PLAYING WITH MY FEELINGS!!!! WAAAAH!!!" Laugh

To be perfectly honest, those don't really sound like mind games to me. More like a bad habit or a struggling parent. I mean you could complain about her making you go places and stuff but I don't see any real psychological side to it. Other than maybe the illusion of a choice.

Let's do the time warp again!

guilt (or fake guilt) is an emotion that can be used to pshycologically have power over people...it is seen in every day situations like SK's or all the way into the court room. so it can be pshycological.

I highly suggest Mobb Deep's albums The Infamous and Hell on Earth, if you have not listened to it yet.

Here's what I think: When she's asking whether you want to go, she thinks she is being nice but expecting you to say you'll go, and when she tells you you're going, she's teaching you not to be rude. It's probably related to the things Happy Camper mentioned.

One time, I was taping a baseball game for my school television station, and the adult who runs the station and the tapings asked whether I wanted to run the main camera or "direct"--operate the device that chooses which camera gets shown on TV. I chose the main camera because I don't like sitting, but he really wanted to be on the main camera. Fortunately, he told me that he was just trying to be nice and that he actually wanted to be on the main camera.

ugh your mom sounds like a child. Throwing tantrums at her age just messes you up. There's nothing worse, or more disgusting in my personal opinion, then a 40 year old who has the maturity of anything under 30

my parents like guiltrips. what really pisses me off is when they tell me to do something, like taking out the trash or scooping dog crap, and i say ok. then, when i'm not looking, they go and do it and then yell at me for "not doing my job and letting others carry my weight" even though i had every intention of doing in within the next five minutes, and had told them that already.

Maturity isn't an age thing though, except maybe for really really small kids. But I'm sure there are kids who don't throw tantrums either.

But yeah. Some of my friends have parents who still throw tantrums... one's mother got pissed off at the neighbour over something to do with birds, and had a shouting contest, then came home and took it out on people in the house.

It's disgusting, yes.... but I find it more sad. They could do a lot better, but they don't.

I hate it when people do that... Stabhead

Yes. I have to do the dishes, but sometimes I'll skip a day or do it later than normal. When I get around doing it, lo and behold, it's done, and I have had serious intention of actually doing it.

Another thing is my room. My mom says it's messy. Now, I can see where she gets that, but I can find my stuff better that way. (except for objects that mysteriously vanish when I need them and never return again. Sometimes I base my whole room cleaning on finding those things.) However, my mom is pretty old, like, late 50's, and so she has a harder time maneuvering or something. The point is, I get really steamed when I totally plan to clean my room, but my mom comes out of nowhere and tells me to clean it. Now it's something that wasn't for myself anymore.
