RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

The forums are mostly read-only and are in a maintenance/testing phase, before being permanently archived. Please use this time to get the contact details of people you'd like to keep in touch with. My contact details are here.

Please do not make a mirror copy of the forums in their current state - things will still change, and some people have requested to be able to edit or delete some of their personal info.

More Public School Bullshit

I just remember this from about a year ago, thought you guys might find it interesting:

When I first entered one of my classrooms last year, the teacher told us to take note of the signs she had up above the white board. I took a look at them. I do not remember all of them, but a few stuck with me. I cannot quote them, but for the most part, they said something similar to, "When dissagreeing please do so in a non disrespectful manner and be sensitive, example, 'I see what you are saying, but' or, 'Well you have a point, but'"

Basically they were telling us to not tell the stupid kids in the class that they were indeed stupid. This is pretty pathetic, when you have an actually slightly mentally challenge child in the class who should be in a class for his type.

If you take a second and read this shit, you realize that the fucking morons who came up with this bullshit basically make you lie about something. It is total bullshit to say, "well you have a point." When the person you are speaking of actually had no point and said something completely irrelevant. The same goes for, "I see what you are saying." I thought nothing of this when I first read it, but when I was responding to an answer someone had given the teacher which was completely wrong, I was told to, "Use one of the designated responses when responding to another student." I responding saying, "Are you kidding me? You are actually telling me how to speak and respond to another person who is wrong? You have to be kidding me." I then gave my response, once again, I said, "Well, you are wrong, you are completely wrong, in fact, you have no idea what is going on, you do not even deserve to have the privilege to answer questions here. Why are you even talking? Why are you aloud to give a completely wrong answer, and why am I, when giving the right answer get in trouble for the way I stated it, I am sorry, but that is bullshit." The teacher told me to get out.

A few minutes later, she came out with a referral, saying I was being insensitive and rude. I took it, ripped it and walked home. The entire thing was bullshit.

What do you think?

Way cool man, good job.

I highly suggest Mobb Deep's albums The Infamous and Hell on Earth, if you have not listened to it yet.

Why would they tell you how to respond to people? Really stupid idea, people should be able to express what they feel, don't follow what a poster on the wall says..
The person you're talking to should have the right to say what he means, and you should have the right to tell him he's wrong. Sometimes I just wonder where teachers get these ideas..

You pwned that silly teacher Yes

If someone's being retarded... you should be able to tell them so if you want. I'd just be careful if they were really sensitive or something... but other than that... let 'em have it.

meh if you know stuff about psychology, that's a good line if you want to influence someone. 'i see what you mean and..." is a good way to let them know you're not completely disregarding their idea. also helps them see the connection between your idea and theirs.

BUT...

Should have eaten the referral. Dramatic effect is a must if you're looking to infuriate your teachers. =D

You have a point there, however I am not trying to sell a car or persuade ones opinion.

It is completely bullshit to encourage that garbage in a school. I just can't take that shit.

yeah, that's an interesting point. in a way, it's encouraging people to be open-minded and polite. though at the same time, they shouldn't discourage people from speaking their minds and being honest.

That si correct, but if that is not one's goal or aim they should not be forced to respond that way to someone who was wrong. (i know you werent saying that i was commenting on the rule itself)
