RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

Me... write a school play?

Hello everyone,

After walking out a shitty school play, I, along with everyone else decided it sucked and I nearly fell asleep a few times. So, instead of just complaining about it, I decided I might write my own and submit it because the truth is, I think I could do a better job. Here's the letter I sent them

Dear Drama department,

While I respect the hard work and long hours you put into your plays, I find myself finding them completely underwhelming. Let's be honest, I don't know many high school students who want to sit through Hamlet every year. You're probably asking yourself, "You can do a better job?" and the answer is yes, I think I've come up with an idea that is not only informative, but pretty interesting to watch. Attached to this letter is my script, while it will seem violent I've also decided to let you know that it's within the schools age group. According to the MPAA these are the guidelines for a PG-13 movie.

"A PG-13 rating is a sterner warning by the Rating Board to parents to determine whether their children under age 13 should view the motion picture, as some material might not be suited for them. A PG-13 motion picture may go beyond the PG rating in theme, violence, nudity, sensuality, language, adult activities or other elements, but does not reach the restricted R category. The theme of the motion picture by itself will not result in a rating greater than PG-13, although depictions of activities related to a mature theme may result in a restricted rating for the motion picture. Any drug use will initially require at least a PG-13 rating. More than brief nudity will require at least a PG-13 rating, but such nudity in a PG-13 rated motion picture generally will not be sexually oriented. There may be depictions of violence in a PG-13 movie, but generally not both realistic and extreme or persistent violence. A motion picture’s single use of one of the harsher sexually-derived words, though only as an expletive, initially requires at least a PG-13 rating. More than one such expletive requires an R rating, as must even one of those words used in a sexual context. The Rating Board nevertheless may rate such a motion picture PG-13 if, based on a special vote by a two-thirds majority, the Raters feel that most American parents would believe that a PG-13 rating is appropriate because of the context or manner in which the words are used or because the use of those words in the motion picture is inconspicuous."

If you still find it inappropriate, by all means you can scrap it. This obviously wouldn't be an in class project, but then again this isn't the first one. I hope you consider the audiences time along with yours when you're considering this. I'm not going to lie, I hate school, but if you're going to force us to sit through an hour long play, it may as well be in the right interest of students.

SS: I've always promised myself I would never get myself involved in anything extra-curricular at school, not because I can't, but because I think it's discouraging. But like I said, it's less about me. You're probably wondering "Wouldn't you be just as guilty as wasting the students' time as the people who do Hamlet?" and no, I don't think so, it gets everyone out of class for an hour. I hate praising my work but I honestly think it could work. By the way, the story is about mobsters, except scaled down just enough for school.

thanks for reading.
