RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

Literally forcing homeworking

I came across this website months ago and it seemed interesting altought i didn't join, now i have a problem and i did join to ask some questions Smile.

My high school applied a new stupid rule in my grade, now when a student dosen't do one homework(i am not joking,no chances),a teacher call the student parents and threaten them with paranoid stuff like:Your child is gonna be expelled from the school if he dosen't do homework, the student also get a detention(parents wrath+detention Yuck )

My parents got called once and they did believe all that shit =/ and when i ask my teachers about that stupid rule, they say it's gonna be that way in college(my ass).

What do you suggest me to do?

Is it an actual rule, or did they just say that? Make sure it's an actual rule. Sounds like bullshit to me, homework is something to be graded, the punishment for not doing it is an 0 on that particular assignment. My spanish teacher gave out detentions if she was pissed off and you didn't have your homework, at the time, I didn't know you couldn't do that.

The big problem in that situation is the parents.. At least I wouldn't mind how much punishment the shitty teacher would try to feed me, it's the whole "parent-school-cooperation" thing that's dangerous. Would be cool if you could get the whole class to skip homework and see what happened, but I guess most students don't have the guts

That's the purpose of report cards, they aren't so you and your parents know your grades, they're to get you in trouble. If the first part was so, then they'd just tell you your grades, and trust you to tell you parents if they wish to know.

Well, it's a quick and easy way to get out of school then... Razz

But yeah, college isn't like that. The one I was at didn't give two shits whether or not you did the work. They just give you a 0 if you don't. No big deal or anything.

expulsion AND detention? how can they do both? sounds like another way for school to say, 'you can only be thinking what we tell you to think.'

Isn't it pretty scary that such blackmail works? The parents certainly think that this is necessary and that they need to force their kids to do homework, so the only ways to fix this are to change the parents' attitude or to ignore the parents somehow. If you fail miserably but don't try to defend yourself when your parents confront you about your failure, your parents will start acting differently.

They really call the parents(they did once for me),but the whole "school expulsion" is paranoid shit so the parents get more "aware" and yell at their kids.

No way would any school expell you ever.

I highly suggest Mobb Deep's albums The Infamous and Hell on Earth, if you have not listened to it yet.

we get after school detentions sometimes if we don't give in homework. It hasn't happened to me at my current school but at my old school I had to stay in after school a lot for not doing homework, I tried to explain that it was too hard and I didn't understand it but they just called me a liar and said I was being lazy. So yeah, I had to catch the train at like 4:30PM when all the weirdos come out...I haven't had that happen to me at my new school yet but I hope it doesn't because I live more far away and the train near my school isn't on the same line at the one near my house (my old school was one train stop away from my house). I asked my mum what to do if I miss my school bus and she told me to catch a public bus...but public buses = molestation and scary mental people...

I had a similar problem, I checked the school rule books and other materials which indicate any such rules.
I couldn't find a single rule that implied threatenous blackmail.
So when It came to homework day, as usual I didn't do it. We have enough problems instead of worrying about homework.
School is for learning not hometime. our own time is there for us, to sit down and unwind. Not to do work we have already done.

So when the teacher started ranting and raving I told her that she couldn't call my parents and threaten them with me being put into detention or any other exercise. When she asked why not, I just said it isn't in the rule book and if it isn't written down it isn't a real rule. Its just something they say to brainwash us, we apparantly have to behave in their classes. No we don't, thats just making it easier for them. We need to stand up to teachers who enforce stupid rules that only makes it harder for us, like no wearing hats. No warm clothes in winter.

School is practice for the future, practice makes perfect. Nobody’s perfect so why practice?

They say it's the way it is going to be in college? ROFL. They don't talk to your parents at all in college, you are an autonomous adult in college. And as for homework, most of the homework assigned in college is simply studying, your entire grades will petty much be based on tests. Call them on their bullshit.

As for the actual problem itself, it's easier to work with your parents on this one, you'll go a lot further with them on your side. But if they won't listen then I would suggest figuring out ways to get your homework done without too much shit on your part. A lot of (stupid) teachers grade on how much space you took up on the paper instead of what you actually wrote.

If kids turn in half-assed homework assignments, they may realize how harmful such a strict policy is.

School has the paradox in that people like to naturally learn, and that's why school is supposedly there, yet school turns people off liking things and so ironically it defeats itself.
