RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

No hats in school?

Yesterday, I talked to my school's principal about a district rule that banned wearing hats to school. I told her that the no hats rule violated the 1st Amendment, and I also talked about the Tinker case, and that clothing and other things could be banned only if they disrupted school alot, and if it was unsafe. Wearing hats to school won't disrupt anything, and it's safe, but my principal just said that the school board could make rules banning certain clothing as they please.

Give me a break. This month or November i'm going to wear a hat to school and show them.

If it doesn't incite a riot, it should be sign. Get a petition going and send it to someone of proper authority in your school.

Damn that's true. Don't get me wrong. I'm not being condescending or anything like that, but every school day, I hear a teacher or V.P. tell somebody to take their hat off or pull their hood down. I knew that it was a violation of the first amendment, but I dismiss it because plenty of first amendment rights are violated in school (shame on me), but I forgot that there was a specific Supreme Court case that justified wearing hats in school. I'll have to bring that up in a discussion or write an op/ed on it for my school newspaper.

Petitions are not allowed at my school, can they do that?

I'd like to think they can't, that has something to do with your right to protest or something like that....I dunno. I'll do more research.

They can't unless you go to a private school.

No hats in school?

My school district use to have a similar "no hats or gtfo" rule. They changed it that people may wear hats, but if the teacher requests for students not to wear them, then they must take it off.

No hats in school?

To me it seems like a bunch of crap, because as always it is the result of other people ruining it. They think that because of a cap, they cannot identify you. Uhm, excuse me. I am the only one on the campus, dressed in all green and black, with snake bites, and a friggen candy creeper rave mask on the side of my belt. I am 5'3. Do you really, not know who I am!?!?

RE: No hats in school?

You know what disrupts class?

A stubborn student and stubborn teacher arguing about a fucking hat.

I was in a class one day,and one of the kids in my class decided he was going to wear his hat. And my teacher decided he wasn't going allow it.

We spent a good half of the class watching this fucking debate between my teacher.
It was to the point where I was ready to get up and take this kid's fucking overprice ugly piece of shit hat and throw it out the door. I really just didn't like this kid. He was one those kids.. You know?

This happened to be a law class... But I couldn't find much of anything to back up my teacher's claims. Something about school not being a "public forum" and therefore you can't really cite first amendment rights as a reason to wear a hat.

But really, all my time in alt ed before they started enforcing the no hats rule (seriously, in alt ed we could wear our hoodies, wear hats and use our phones within reason) I have no once looked at a kid's hat and been so distracted by it I couldn't pay attention to the lesson.
Unless some dickhead comes to school in like a super crazy hat with glitter or lights or horns all over it, let him fucking wear it!

I'm a girl ffffeck

No hats in school?

You have a problem with my hat?

My hat's not hurting anything. You have a problem with my hat not hurting anything?

Well, I can change that I guess...

(hat grows arms and legs, jumps on teacher, eats xir face)

And THAT'S how it's done.

Hello, traveler.

This is an ancient account I have not used in a long time. My views have changed much in the intervening months and years.

Nonetheless, I refuse to clean it up. Pretending that I've held my current views since the beginning of time is what we in the industry call a lie. Asking people to do so contributes to moralistic self-loathing. "See, those people have nothing damning! I do! I'm truly vile!"

Because you can never be a good person with a single blemish on the moral record, I thought that simply entertaining some thoughts made me irredeemable. Though I don't care for his writing style, William Faulkner presents a good counterexample. He went from being a typical Southern racist to supporting the civil rights movement. These days we'd yell at him for that, probably.

People are allowed to change their views.

Nevertheless, this period of my life has informed some of how I am today. In good ways and bad ways. To purge it would be to do a disservice to history. Perhaps it will not make anyone sympathetic, but it may help someone understand.

If, after reading all this, you still decide to use the post above as evidence that I am evil today, ask yourself if you have never disagreed with the moral code you now follow. In all likelihood you did, at some point. If some questions are verboten, and the answer is "how dare you ask that," don't expect your ideological opponents to ever change their minds.

No hats in school?

My school has that rule also. It's only ignored at the school dances and stuff like that. I think the rule's stupid though. I don't really pay attention to other's people's hats(Except if they are REALLY crazy).

No hats in school?

My school did away with that no-hat rule a long time ago, but the middle and elementary schools still enforce it. High school is comparatively libertarian compared to the horror that was middle school...

RE: No hats in school?

No hoods or hats were allowed in my school. Supposedly it was both distracting AND disrespectful.

RE: No hats in school?

Ah, "disrespect," the catch-all sin of the student. One can't help wondering whether this is responsible for the social anxiety of much of the later generations. After all, if all we learn about respect is that its definition is unpredictable, we might rightly fear violating it -- yes, better just stay inside, we can't disrespect anyone there.

gum chewing? disrespect. hat? disrespect. No title on homework? disrespect. Questioning validity of teachers statement? disrespect. Defending your rights? disrespect.

Isn't there a study that shows gum-chewing has a positive affect on students?

Once again, the naivety of schools shows again.

No hats in school?

The one reason that I really do not like school is that is it all government. I am not an Anarchist, I just do not really like the American Government system. Like for instance. I am not Christian. I am Shinto. (Believer in the Japanese Gods. ((Kami)) ) We have to stand for the pledge. I do not so I get in trouble. They say the words "Under God". It goes against my religion. Frankly I think school is another prison for children. You HAVE NO RIGHTS. Freedom of Speech? REVOKED! Right to Assembly? REVOKED. It is all a bunch of Grade-A Bull.
