RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

Open campus or closed?

So who here can leave school for lunch and who is stuck in the building? When I was in high school, everyone could leave, no questions asked, as long as they came back. When I was a senior, they changed it so only the tenth graders and up could go out and the year after I'd graduated, only upperclassmen could go.

I think it's very stupid that students aren't even trusted to be on their own for 45 minutes nowadays. This is the infantalization of young people that I rant about. What will be next, prohibiting students from walking to and from school on their own?

My school has like 8 fucking bathrooms, I think. 8 for girls and 8 for boys. Additional bathrooms for teachers, but recently my retarded ass school decided to put doors on them (yes, the bathrooms didn't have doors, but the bathrooms were built so that nobody could peek in and see as they were walking the halls). And they fucking locked the doors to every fucking bathroom except for the ones on the "main" floor. So I could be all the way up on the 800 level and I would have to go down 5 fucking levels to get to the 300. Don't get me wrong, it's not a death defying walk, but it's damned annoying to have to walk down all of those steps to take a piss, and then have to walk all the way back up. Then the school makes big deals out of people being late Rolleyes...

I see no logical reason why kids should have a closed campus...if they are failed for skipping then they simply got what they deserved....

It was open my freshman and sophmore years. Then they closed it for freshmen last year and now for sophmores this year. I got in JUST IN TIME

only seniors can leave for lunch. the rest of us are stuck inside. as one can imagine, the black market for off-campus pass forgeries is has been thriving for some time.

All grades can go outside for lunch, I think only 10-12th can go off the grounds. Actually, its probably all grades.
But we only have 20 minutes lunches, so really going anywhere and getting back on time in impossible.

But they have these little passes you can get, if you're moderately well behaved and such. So you can an entire hour, but thats inly if you have a study hall before or after. Or if you have middle lunch. (That where your lunch is in the middle of a class period, because you have a study hall 5th period)

Mississippi... figures. The south has an abysmal track record on youth rights. You know what I would love, is if an 18-year-old left campus, was busted for it and then sued for false imprisonment. I think he'd have a leg to stand on since 18 is the legal adult age.

yaeh Mississippi sucks. Schools(at least in the county I live in) Are allowed to make any rules they want. I can't wait for the day they make a rule that I can sue them over. My school looks bad enough all ready. Something like that would just make it worse.

I used to walk around the school grounds during lunch, until they had a guy waiting for me at the door I usually came back in the school through. He asked if I was smoking and I said no, and then he said that I'm not supposed to leave the building. And I was all like "Whoa. That's stupid."

If we're supposed to be mature enough not to talk in class, then of course we're mature enough to be allowed to leave the building. Jerks.

Had other students been able to walk the grounds? Were you singled out?
