RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

The forums are mostly read-only and are in a maintenance/testing phase, before being permanently archived. Please use this time to get the contact details of people you'd like to keep in touch with. My contact details are here.

Please do not make a mirror copy of the forums in their current state - things will still change, and some people have requested to be able to edit or delete some of their personal info.

Most of the people are very very stupid. And If you pointed me to Wikipiedia, I'd learn more in an hour then school would teach me in a day.

I love being degraded.

Hmm...

I'm not going to sarcastically bash you like veryone else, but I will say what I think.

I believe that you like school becuase you have been brainwashed.

P.S. I commemorate you for actually speaking your mind on a site like this, but if you like school so much, why are you even here?

it's not that simple, but that's a long story. i don't think you're quite "brainwashed" though, based on some other posts of yours i've seen. at least you give a reason for liking school instead of just calling us stupid punks, so thank you for that.

i doubt you're brainwashed, but a LOT of the people who like school that people on this site have encountered are. meaning that the idea of school is do deeply engrained in their heads that they immediately reject any alternative, and even become hostile towards us because we think differently.

Maybe they think like that because they want to live in a society where they know there will be doctors to look after them when they're ill, accountants to look after their money, architects will design their houses and stuff like that. If people started to just not go to school then there would be much less people to do the jobs needed in society. I might be wrong though, I'm only 13 Razz

and in exchange for all those services all that's required is they give up all freedom, dignity, and independence. i doubt society would collapse with the abscence of school; people can teach themselves. they just need to get freed from this mindset that it can't be done, and that they need someone else to provide them with an appropriate state of mind.

The fact that you said "I'm only 13" meens that you clearly don't think you're smart enough to understand what you're talking about.

The fact people think we wouldn't have doctors and engineers is stupid! Companies would pay for the education of people they want to hire, factories would fund schools for their worker's children in hopes the kids would work for them. Parents could teach kids themselves or just pay for their kids to go to school. Many things could work without the restrictions of freedoms and the government bureaucracy.

It's not uncommon for people to work their way through college too.

I don't like school because I could learn things better other ways and it's the principle of the thing. I should have freedom not conscription! If you like the way school teaches you, fine and dandy with me, but what I'd like to see your opinion change about is the fact that education should be best served to people compulsory. It isn't right. Can you not see my argument?

As I read Weswammy's statement one word comes to mind: naive. You seem to have arrived in a fairy tale world where everything would be just "fine and dandy" if everybody just did things the way you think they should be done!

Some of the reasons for schools are not as obvious as you might think. For one thing, a lot of parents decide they want to be educators or school support staff because they need to work and want to hang around with kids all the time. Yeah, our schools provide jobs from the time they are planned to the day they are torn down. And, to become a "teacher" a person has to go to a University and take a bunch of very expensive classes in a program that can be a real pain in the ass. I'm telling you this because in 1989 I got my Master's Degree in Education, did all the coursework to become a teacher, and only needed to do "student teaching" to be certified to teach high school. Well, I didn't do student teaching then because I got married and was working at a really good paying job. In 2000, my job wasn't fun anymore and I told my wife I really did want to be a teacher after all. She worked as a bank executive, and said she would support my career change. When I went back to the University of Alaska and told them I was now ready to do my student teaching, they told me it had been too long and I had to do the WHOLE PROGRAM OVER AGAIN! Only now the courses were graduate courses and although everybody else was an undergrad, I had to pay double or more. I did it, though, and I love what I'm doing now.

I don't think you can learn enough by just doing it yourself, although I have had to noodle out some correspondence courses on my own. I also don't think you really have the capacity to know what you will need to know to be successful. And, I think there are plenty of people who should never have kids, so I'm not so keen on the idea that parents can teach their kids enough, either. In my own family the formula has been: stupid parents = stupid kids + stupid grandkids who have no real control over their lives.

I have one student whose dad says she doesn't need to finish high school because he didn't finish high school. He hates his job, he drinks too much, her mother left a long time ago, and recently he kicked my student out of the house. She wants to become an EMT and she needs to finish her high school diploma to get into the EMT certification program. Fortunately, our program is working for her now that she has set her mind to it.

Everybody's situation is different, but to assume that you can teach yourself enough before you are 21 years old without being required to go to school in this day and age is, well, naive. School is your job until you graduate--or find another job--perhaps in the business of education!

Quote:I don't think you can learn enough by just doing it yourself

Fair enough, but that doesn't mean school should be compulsory. You can learn from other people without being forced to do so.

Quote:I also don't think you really have the capacity to know what you will need to know to be successful.

That will vary from person to person and will depend on how you define "successful".

Quote:I think there are plenty of people who should never have kids

Agreed there Razz

Quote:I'm not so keen on the idea that parents can teach their kids enough, either.

Probably not, if they're the ONLY source of knowledge. But there are tons of people around, and there's always the library and internet too.

Quote:Everybody's situation is different, but to assume that you can teach yourself enough before you are 21 years old without being required to go to school in this day and age is, well, naive.

What is "enough"? Surely you're not referring to scientific formulas and the miniscule details of various things that you are required to memorize? I would have loved to give some examples here, but unfortunately I can't remember any.

I think you're equating "school" with "learning from other people", right? Like I said before, you don't need to be forced to do that. Being forced to do it will probably ruin it anyway.

I don't think it's impossible.

This isn't entirely relevant, but it somewhat explains what I mean, so I'll say it anyways. In grade 3 my class never followed a schedule or directly covered the subjects that we were supposed to. The teacher read the first 3 Harry Potter books to us, we read about people climbing Mount Everest on the internet, and we wrote about whatever we wanted. I think I learned more in that grade than any other.

That seems to prove that school is the best place to learn, but all those things are quite similar to what I did at home at that age. It really wouldn't have mattered if I were at school or not. As long as they know how to read, people can and usually will teach themselves whatever they need to know.

Pay me. Seriously, if it's a job pay me and let me choose to quit if I want. Until then it's involuntary servitude.

I find you to be the naive one, brainwashed by the Man. School doesn't equal smart. Today's schools are doing a worse job than ever too. I find the stereotype that high school dropouts are lazy appalling. I find that I could learn better teaching my self because I have. I've learned more interesting things relevant to me in a few hours of searching Wikipedia that school could teach me in a day.

There are 2 problems with school:
*Ineffectiveness(which you seem, thankfully, to want to fix.)
*Government interference (you know, publicly funded schools, compulsory education laws)

I fucking love waking up at 6 am everyday tired as hell to go somewhere I don't want to go. To go to a place where I get judged, where I get ridiculed, where I get told what to do, and how to do it. I just love all of it. I love being herded like cattle, I love living in fear of the teachers, I love appeasing people who fucked up when they were my age. I love it, I just cannot wait until I get to go back tomorrow, to get yelled at when I don't turn in an assignment I didn't feel like doing.

school isnt education, and i know that we all know this, but, in this current system, where hte majority of people believe that school does equal an education, for people like us, with our beliefs, trying to get a career or a job is hard, this is because oyu need qualification, which is apart of the corrupt system which we despise right, so if we drop out of school, it will only be harder for us to reach our goal in getting a job or a career.

Well, at least its what i think.

the only thing i look forward in going to school is friends and jumping into bushes... otherwise its useless and boring..
