RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017
The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.
If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.
To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.
I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.
I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.
I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.
I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.
Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.
Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.
-SoulRiser

Computer doesn't sound right
Basically, the fan is making noticeably more noise than usual. Halp?

Re: Computer doesn't sound right
It's because laptop fans adjust frequency for how hard they're working.

Re: Computer doesn't sound right
Dust has probably accumulated on your laptop which basically lowers the fan's efficiency in removing heat from it.
Sooner or later someone should open it and clean it...

Re: Computer doesn't sound right
Yeah, seriously. Just get some canned air or a vacuum cleaner, open the case and start cleaning all the dust out.
Recommendation: do this in a well ventilated room.

I would, but if anyone saw me opening the computer they'd shit bricks and insist that we take it in somewhere to get the ridiculously simple procedure done for a ridiculous price because YOU'LL MESS SOMETHING UP.

Ah, just blow some canned air into the vents then? Then apply vacuum and suck out the dislodged dust?

Re: Computer doesn't sound right
If its overheating at all, I find that when I use my laptop at the table (becuase you cant play FPS with a touchpad) if you take the bottome panel off, exposing the inards, then just use as is, it drasticly reduces heat. The heat can radiate out more efficiently as opposed to having to pass through the much smaller air vent.

It's not warmer than usual (at least, not noticeably), it's just that it sounds like the fan is sounding louder than usual.

Re: Computer doesn't sound right
The fan probably needs to be oiled or replaced.
Open the thing up, peel off the sticker on the fan half way, and shove a couple of drops of oil in there. Clean up all the extra oil, put sticker back on and off you go. That usually works.
Some fans have an extra little rubber plug under the sticker as well, which you'll have to take out too (and put back afterwards).

Re: Computer doesn't sound right
DO NOT DO THAT! It will only make it worse. Just trust me. Do NOT oil your fan. Just dont do it.

Re: Computer doesn't sound right
If it makes it worse... you either have a really shit fan, or you're doing it wrong.
I've oiled lots of fans before. It always makes it better.
If it's a really crap fan it only makes it better for a short while before you need to oil it again.

Re: Computer doesn't sound right
Amazon or something.
Also, be careful if you're going to take stuff off your computer yourself. To be on the safe side, invest in an antistatic wrist band, work on a hard top surface, take your shoes off, try not to move around too much, don't wear too much clothy items. I've also heard things like touching the case will ground yourself, you don't want to fry your computer over some electrostatic discharge.
Or get someone else to do it.
My computer sounds like shit right now, I need to take it apart and clean one of the fans on the inside that I can't get to from the side or back. After awhile of the computer being on and heavy usage, the fan fails and the computer automatically shuts down, or so I think. It also makes a ridiculously loud noise at all times, especially when its stopping and starting. I use a program called speedfan which lets me check the temperature of stuff and clock it but I need to do a check whilst a game has been running for at least an hour to see if it is overheating from fan failure which im 99% sure as the fan stops and starts every few seconds from I'm assuming lots of dust. I'm also going to do some checks like only allowing power to go to a certain fan to determine which one it is if I happen to get stuck.

Re: Computer doesn't sound right
I've worked on tons of laptops and not once have I ever fried one due to static electricity. I've tried to prevent it by touching metal things, and touching the side every once in a while, but eh. I'm not that cautious about it, and I've done it on carpet in fucking sweatpants before.
If you want to take it apart, your main concern is going to be putting it back together without breaking anything, and without forgetting to reconnect any wires. IMO.

Re: Computer doesn't sound right
Don't need some stupid wristband.
Just touch some metal to ground yourself or the metal case on the outside before you dig into the computer and you'll be fine and for the love of god make sure the damn thing is unplugged!
Awols dad was fucking with his pc and almost destroyed the damn thing because he left it plugged up and figured turning the power off was enough(the motherboard pulls small amounts of power while plugged up).
Also I agree with absent in that you'll have to remember where everything goes but that shouldn't be too hard.

Meh, EVERY fan that I have ever put oil in/on has gone drasticly downhill from the point it was priorly at. It fucks with the electromagnet that makes the fan spin
