RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017
The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.
If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.
To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.
I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.
I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.
I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.
I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.
Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.
Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

School fails to educate me
So far, life has been good for me. My dad and I no longer fight. I decided to forgive and forget those beatings that i got as a child. This doesn't mean that I will tell my children (if I have any) that what my dad did was good. I just don't need to have all that anger inside me.
I decided to talk with my dad peacefully and to be tolerant of some of his opinions. I didn't yell at him or insult him. And now he actually listens to what I have to say and even agrees that schooling is the worst way of educating kids and that young people should have rights. He still thinks that young people should be "disciplined" but he doesn't use the "im right your wrong" technique anymore. The reason why im still in school is because my dad doesn't have a job and right now he simply doesn't have the money to buy text books or pay for an online school but he told me that once he has enough money to pay for monthly stuff he might send me to an online school. I also told him about my friend's mom offer to homeschool both my friend and I. My mom just yelled at me but my dad was more open minded.
So I decided to get passing grades, but not straight A's or anything like that because my parents will probably think that I should stay because there will be more opportunities. I use my time at home to educate myself for real, play games, and pray. but guess what????
school gets in the way of all these things!
Sometimes my english teacher make us write essays for homework and it just takes one essay to ruin the rest of my day. In the end I don't get to learn anything because im too tired or I have no time.
I also wish I could just learn french at home with those disks that my dad gave me. but guess what? I come home tired and with too little time for myself. Each day at home i often have this on mind:
*learn french
*learn some algebra
*learn some history
*play guitar
*play computer games
but I only have time to learn one of these things. I wish I could stay home and learn these things during the day instead of waiting for the weekend when im not tired. I told my dad about this but he just said that I will do just fine if I wait for the weekend or do it on my own time.
Also school gets in the way of my spiritual life. I pray a lot and some of the devotions that i pray take like 20 minutes. I am afraid to tell my parents about this because im afraid that they will think I am just using my spirituality as some sort of excuse to leave school now.
I just wish my dad would understand that today education is everywhere and that I can do just fine without school.
P.S
I just noticed that in my older posts I made my parents look like like evil people. It was probably because I was very mad at them, especially my dad. And Yes, they can be jerks sometimes but in reality they are people like you and me. At times they are good and at times they are bad.

Well lets hope that you can find ways to see education and schooling as useful. You might as well, since you have to go anyway. No sense in complaining about something you cannot do much about.

School has never been useful to me. It has always done more damage than good. However, I don't let school interfere with my real education and since for now, I still have to go, I just have to use some of my own time. Maybe one day my parents will realize how much easier it is for me to learn something at home than at school.

There's a difference between complaining about something and deluding yourself into believing something is useful when deep down you know it really isn't.

Re: School fails to educate me
Great! Finally ended the conflicts with your dad. Good luck getting homeschooled. It isn't like unschooling, but I personally would rather be home of course.
