RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017
The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.
If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.
To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.
I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.
I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.
I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.
I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.
Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.
Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

Quitting School
A sorta forum-blog thingy for now...I'll be opening a website devoted to it soon.
PRELUDE -
I was enlisted into a charter school along the lines of a night school this year. While there arent as many burdens, its still school. And people know here that the education system is a failure, so I'll keep it short.
I have done about 2 half semesters worth of work in two classes since August 25th or so when I enrolled. The fact is, while its less stressful, its not for me, and my plan is to quit school before entering the 11th grade. In other words, I have four months to persuade my parents to quit school.
My goal, as of now, is to get a GED and go to community college. The reason is simply because the GED will help me get work a lot easier and help me go to community college a lot easier. I want to go to community to study music, and hopefully ill get a music career going, maybe ill study at a good conservatory in San Francisco. But for now, I'm stuck in school.
So for now, I've got one thing in mind, and thats persuading my parents. So begins phase 1 of quitting school.

Good luck, keep us updated
That does sound like a really cool idea for a website... sort of like a guide to quitting school kind of thing. Lemme know when it's up somewhere and I'll link to it

Go for it. If your parents were open minded enough to let you go to night school then you may have a chance to drop out completely.

Yes. I want to reach out to drop outs. The only resources available are unschooling and propoganda telling you if you drop out you'll become a failure at life (without helping the dropouts, of course.) I want to create a site which will show people what they can do upon quitting school that will get them on a path to success, and that dropping out isn't the end of the world, even if it is harder to find work.

Yeah, that's a really good idea. I've been wanting to add more about that sort of thing, but all SS has on it are 2 questions in the FAQ section. A whole site would be much more helpful.

I also found a series of convincing arguments by David Friedman and how he unschools his kids. Everybody check David Friedman and his father the late great Milton Friedman out if you want to really find a cause thats worth donating to for real education reform.
