RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

I got sent to the office today!

Okay, during lunch I went to the bathroom and drew the anarchy sign on my cheek, and lines on my eye, and a face on my other cheek. Then I went to science when my teacher (A total bitch, and really blind, not to mention a bit of a ditz. She also looks like a witch Yuck) call into the office whispering "Umm... Nigel has the anarchy sign written on his cheek." and then she sent me over their warding off all my polite but angry protests saying with her sickly sincere and really fake tone of voice "I know sweety, but It's not appropriate for school."

So I walk to the office, and I'm like, "Look. It's a political philosophy, weather or not you agree with it is up to you, I'm not shoving it down your throats." Despite that, they claimed that it still wasn't appropriate, and then they made me go to the bathroom and watch it off.

They won for now, although when I went to the bathroom i graffiti'd everything with mindless scribbles, and tommoro I will have the anarchy sign written ALL over me. Smile

*sigh* when you rebel, don't be a fucking idiot about it. that would be stupid and nothing would happen.

I highly suggest Mobb Deep's albums The Infamous and Hell on Earth, if you have not listened to it yet.

What makes me a 'fucking idiot about it'?

It's not like I got in any serious trouble.

Have a friend write "God Bless America" on his face, and then complain about it to the teacher. And if they don't tell your friend the same thing they told you, point out their hypocrisy.

I don;t have many friends there, so I'll just do that to myself. Good Idea though!

Learned the darthmat has. Anarchy isn't about showing how much of a rebel you are. While anarchy is a great political philosophy, you'll notice that nobody else will take you seriously if you have a symbol on your face. I mean, honestly, so many better ways to do something.

Look, I'm not going to pretend drawing an anarchy sign on your face is a real statement either. But he just wants to have fun. It's not real rebellion, it's just youthful fun. So what if he wants to do that? Let him have fun.

If any of us want to instigate serious change, there's a way to do that right too. But this isn't a huge statement, it's just fun.

He tried to pass himself off as a serious anarchist though. I mean, hell, it's bad enough that anarchists get stereotyped with being rebels without a cause, let's not add to it.

His actions will not do anything significant for or against the anarchist movement. He's just one dude in one school.

I guess it really depends. I mean if he's seriously trying to pass off an A on his face as a real statement, that's kind of lame. But if he said it to them in a sarcastic tone or something, that could make a difference.

Nigel's just joking around with this. When he wants to be serious and make a real change, he gets serious and gets heard. As his friend (like, IRL), I can vouch for that.
This is just a silly action. He's not trying to reform the entire school district with it. However, he could actually make a statement using it. The idea that anarchy is not "appropriate" for school and that he should have to wash it off when that may be his political standing is proposterous. I agree that he should have someone write "God Bless America" on their cheek and then complain they should wash it off because he doesn't agree with it and finds it "inappropriate" for school. Unless the school board can logically reason it out (which they can't, it makes no sense), there'll be some pretty big trouble. If they do force the kid to wash it off, he can argue that it was his constitutional right as part of his "freedom of religion" to wear "God Bless America" on his face. Damned if they do, damned if they don't. Small things can have big results. :]

(This is half-joking, guys. It's only theoretically effective. In reality, the school would probably just say something equivalent to "fuck you, I make the rules" and all the parents would agree with it because this country is so damn authoritarian.)

Yeah, I agree.

The school will say "fuck you, my rules", but either way it might even get them to think a little.

And this is random but rock on for linking Zeitgeist from your sig. Smile

It was a bit of both.

I do believe in anarchism, so what's wrong with wearing a symbol I believe in? Besides, the way they were treating me and the statement they were making was very unfair and only hiding a hidden agenda. I stood up for what I believe in, how does that give a bad impression?

And as for all Anarchists being rebels, it depends on their environment. Also, seeing as Anarchism is based upon lack of government and authority. Rebellion is the refusal to accept it.

The way I see it, they go hand in hand.

I don't use the word anarchism anymore to describe my life philosophy. I use the word "individualism". Mainly because people are too stupid to realize the difference between "anarchy" and "anarchism". It's not a compromise of what I believe in, just a different word.

Also, even though I am an anarchist, I'm more of a "Don't Tread on Me" anarchist than a "Destroy the whole system" anarchist. I support the freedom movement all around the world, but I won't throw metaphoric molotovs at the establishment until they invade my own freedom. I'll still throw metaphoric rocks for anyone else though.

And if that makes sense to you, then be proud of yourself. Razz

That's it though. They invade my freedom everyday.

And I am proud of myself. Biggrin
