RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

We read The Giver in 4th grade. I think that was a bit young to be reading that kind of book. None of us appreciated it. But looking back on it, I realized it was some level of literary genius.

I liked A Separate Peace as far as I can remember.

It would be wrong to say The Great Gatsby was boring, as I had a majorly engaged hate/love relationship with it. I hate it because all of the characters suck and everything about the culture infuriates me. I love it because I think the point of it was to reveal how the culture was infuriating and people in that age had a general tendency to suck. I had no patience with it, but I could still appreciate it. Similar to The Crucible. It's agonizing to sit through but in the end, it's powerful.

Still...I hated The Great Gatsby.

The Dark is Rising is one of the worst books I remember from school. Same with The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. I mean that was okay in the curriculum because we mostly debated on whether it should be banned/taught in public schools or not. The book was boring. The debate was not.

Um...The Pearl. I really didn't like The Pearl.

The Scarlet Letter, while great in theme, is terrible in storytelling.

Yeah...those are the ones I remember.

Let's do the time warp again!

The Giver was possibly the best piece of literature writeen in the last (to lazy to reasech when it was published).

The ending was great.

I highly suggest Mobb Deep's albums The Infamous and Hell on Earth, if you have not listened to it yet.

i did not know the giver had sequels Omg *runs to bookstore*

It's hard to say the ending of The Giver was good or bad because it can be interpreted in so many different ways.

Of course, that's what makes it good Cool

But the only real interpretation is "where's the fucking sequel?" I said there should've been a sequel or some more chapters to the book. I just wish I could find my 8th grade teacher, kick her in the knee, and tell her that I fucking called it.

So, while nobody knows that there are more books, we're all making bullshit philsophical assumptions about the end of the first book. It was such a waste of time.

From what i've heard, i dont think the sequels are dead-on "what comes next" books. They are about different people of the same era, i believe. I dunno, my school library is to F'd up to have any books of real worth :/

Maybe Darthmat can clue us in on what the sequels are about Biggrin lol

ugh, our school didnt let us read the giver cuz they thought it "innapropriate" but then we just read flowers for algernon, which is 50% sex, in pretty interesting detail, so it just goes to show you how fuked up our system is...

funny thing: in class, out teacher was explaining before she let us watch the movie charlie (flowers for algernon movie) that we should keep in mind that movies usually were more romantic than the books, so im like "WHAT!?!? MORE than the book??!?! whats this thing rated?!?!" lol, it acually wasnt rated, had to be one of the most book butchering movies iv ever seen tho... Noo

I think it is just as good as The Giver, yes it's THAT good.

My class read The Giver in grade 6.
Half of my class started screaming that it was the best book ever, and the other half screamed that it was the worst book ever.
Some teachers called and complained that we were being noisy, so we got a detention.
Fun.

Harry Potter.
I read 1-4. Worst waste of my time. The funny thing is, I thought it was fun at the time. Looking back now I only see a combination of peer pressure, media hype, and being generally bored with my life that made me read them.

I'd rather watch the movie. At least then you get to eat a bunch of popcorn and bond with family and friends.

I didn't read the books until I was in 5th grade. I didn't read them because since I was in 3ed grade everyone was.
But at the same time I was reading the Green Mile. And the Green Mile OWNS Harry Potter.

The worst book I ever had to read was a kids book when I was 11! It was in English and was called 'Mrs Frisbee and her mousy friends' (Something like that) and was about cartoon mice living on a field! How old does he think we are, our generation is all about downloading porn of the web Mwahaha

Ok...there, admittedly, was one book I didn't like. And it was one we read in 4th grade. It was in diary form, and in first person, of some annoying bitch from the 1800's. God.... I hated it... sooooo much D:

I've surprisingly read some great books at school, like at my old school we were reading Of Mice And Men by John Steinbeck and I left before we finished reading it at school but I continued reading it because I liked it so much. At my new school we read So Much To Tell You by John Marsden and I thought it was great.

I've also had to read some pretty crappy books too, like Dead Unna? (I know, weird name for a book, the question mark is part of the title) by uhh....some guy, can't be fucked finding out his name, but anyway, it sucked, a lot. Also at my old school we had to read Lockie Leonard Legend by another guy who's writing I can't stand, stupid book, hated it. Both those books are actually quite similar, told by the point of view of awkward teenage boys who use sports as a way to channel their teenage angst. I love teenage angsty books but those two books soil the good name of the genre.

When I was teaching 7th grade we read The Outsiders, and it seemed like a great experience. Then, last year my 6th grade class read The Giver. They didn't seem to like it very much but maybe it was too advanced for the ones who complained.

That's the hard thing about being a teacher; trying to find something everybody can get something from. I have a couple of classes here at our alternative school that includes reading books like (Science Ficrtion) "I Robot" and "The Martian Chronicles," and (literature) "To Kill a Mockingbird." Some kids say To Kill a Mockingbird is boring but I've always loved that book.

We have a list of hundreds of books that students can pick from, and a lot of my students like Jack London's "White Fang." I really like London's works, and I'm an Alaska History nut, so we read a lot of books about our great state!
