RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017
The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.
If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.
To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.
I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.
I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.
I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.
I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.
Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.
Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.
-SoulRiser

How easy would it be to just leave
I'm in one of those moods today. I don't know it's because I never woke up fully or if I'm on a sugar crash, all I know is that I'm in a pissy angsty mood and I want to get the hell out of this town and state and time zone.
I just did a little research online. Hawai'i's unemployment rate is the 7th lowest in the nation, thanks to it's tourist industry, and the average rent is $500 less than CT.
I have a tax rebate coming in a few weeks for $1250. I have about $500 worth of debt to take care of, which I can take care of in a month. It costs $600 for the ticket, $300 for a months rent at a motel and another 150 each for a decent bike and prepaid phone.
I can wire money home to take care of my car once I find a job, which shouldn't be hard with spring and summer around the corner.
What do you guys think?

Well, if you're sure you've got everything planned out and you'll have the money, I don't see why you shouldn't go for it, if that's what you want. Just make sure you do have everything planned out, or rather, anything important and money-related.

Yeah, I'm working on that right now. If I budget correctly I should be able to leave by May.
Technically I shouldn't need to quit my job because all the other consultants work remotely from home. As long as I have a laptop and at a 3G phone I should be able to work from anywhere in the country and still pull $1200 from my administration job. I can earn an extra 1000 in tips at a resturaunt. 2200 a month is a good salary no matter where you are. Plus our pay cycle is a month behind so i would still be recieving money until June 1st even if I didn't keep my job.

Wow, that sounds righteous and bitchin'. You must have a fair bit extra coin left over every month.
Out of curiosity, what's this administration job?

It's secretarial work with an IT staffing company in town. I only work 25 hours a week, then I spend another 5-15 hours a week per diem at the nursing home.
It's good money, but it's not enough to live on in Connecticut.

Hence the restaurant job, I take it.

If you can pay off your debt and have things planned out, then go for it. Also, if you ever feel you need more income besides working from home and in restaurants, you can always find another job in the tourism industry.

I hear food, and like erry day groceries are pretty damn expensive because it's a tourist spot.
Also, lots of people live in tents.. could prolly do that.

I just received my refund today. Combined with my weekly pay, I now have $1800 in the bank. That alone will pay for the trip.

Re: How easy would it be to just leave
I just paid off the money I owe to my stepfather. That leaves a traffic ticket that I'm hoping to get reduced down to something reasonable, and an overdue gym payment for $100. My tuition from last year and my student loans are both accessable and payable online, so I can pay those off at any time.
Also I've stopped drinking red bull. At $4 a can 5 day's a week I spend as much as my mother and sister do on cigarettes. That's not cool.

Re: How easy would it be to just leave
It took me awhile, but I just found a listing of apartments in Honolulu for under $800 a month. One of them is only $625. I can do this guys. I can really pull this off.

Things are looking up for you, Ayliana. I'm happy.
As for your parents' reaction, I'm sure that'll be a shocker to them. Not that it matters; it's your life and money, not theirs.

Ahhh, nothing like a good old fashioned apeshit parents episode. Those are always fun. Good luck with that.
From what I've seen, Hawaii looks like a really nice place.
I hope that apartment isn't in some shitty area or something.

Re: How easy would it be to just leave
I told my mother of my plans, and of course she was less than thrilled. And everytime I kept asking her
I also told my manager, and he was less open to the idea of me working remotely than I'd expected, but he's still considering it. His main bitch is that if he wanted a remote administrator / recruiter he'd get one of his people from India to do it. But at least he's still open to the idea.
No one knows that I've purchased the plane ticket yet. I'm going to save that for another week or so when I have more coin in my savings account. I've been working extra hours at the nursing home so I'm going to have about $500-$600 extra to bank.
I've been looking into apartments and I found two fully furnished studios with full amenities. One is for $750 and the other is for $900. The landlord of the $750 apartment already wants to send me a lease form.

Wow damn I actually searched for this thread and forgot I moved it.
You got balls(I mean that in a strong female sort of way) going out like this on a way but I got kudo respect.
Its a bit inspiring to me as I'm trying to do some extreme stuff of my own and I wish you good luck.

Re: How easy would it be to just leave
Long update:
I sent the landlord my resume. He wants to know a little bit about me before he sends me the lease form. Which is reasonable. I'd want to know as much about a tenant as possible too if they contacted me online and claimed to be 5000 miles away.
I've also had a bit of an epiphany regarding my manager. I think he's more open to the idea of me being a remote employee than he's letting on, but he wants to make sure I'm properly trained for the task first. We've started recieving dozens of job postings from at least three different clients and he's finally started training me to be a recruiter for the company. Right now, I suck at it. I've only today managed to get two call backs, and submit one resume for review. But I think if I start getting better at this and show him that I'm serious about moving, and keeping my job at the same time, that he will agree to let me work remotely.
The only other thing I can report on right now is that my car is a pain in my ass. It's the main cause of most my monthly expenses, and this month I have to put two new tires on, get emissions done, renew my registration, and pay that damn ticket. That's almost $500 worth of expenses right there, on top of the $400 I spend regularly on gas, insurance and loan payments. That's not counting the 200+ it's going to cost to buff up the car, fix the side mirror and get it ready for resale.
I might actually have to hit up my parents for money because of this. Which isn't much of a problem, my stepfather loves loaning me money because I'm the only one who ever pays him back. It's just that I really didn't want to do that and I've never loaned more than $500 from him, and that took me three months to pay back.
