To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

Eh, I don't really buy the whole idea of a perfect symmetry between being gay and being straight which suggests that if something (like having a sense of community) doesn't make sense for straight people, it necessarily doesn't make sense for gay people.

I mean, I don't know about having some feeling of community with every LGBT person ever, except maybe a sense of solidarity in a mostly political sense, but I do for the most part feel more comfortable around other gay people and I don't think there's an inherent problem with that. It might seem like defining yourself too much in terms of your sexuality, but in practice the effect is the opposite of that--if most of the people in a group are gay, then no one is "the gay one", and your being gay isn't treated as the extent of your personality. On the other hand, you also don't have to avoid talking about dating or even just gender atypical interests and stuff because you know that'll be seen as making a big deal about your sexuality even though to you they just seem like anything else that happens. (I'm leaving out obviously hostile reactions here, because for the most part anywhere I've lived it's easy enough to find straight people who aren't like that, but I think that was the major reason there was a "gay community" historically.)

Also, there's the whole thing about how social relationships are normally set up with heterosexuality in mind, like in how, typically, straight women are much more affectionate with each other than with men, and it's considered normal to have very intense friendships without them seeming sexual. (At certain times in history the same applied to men, but not really right now.) Friendly relationships between guys and girls are usually more restrained unless it seems like there's no chance one might be attracted to the other, like for childhood friends or something. So it can be awkward in a certain sense because it's easy for romantic love to come from that sort of closeness and then you feel creepy and you feel like you took advantage of the fact that you can be close to girls in a way guys usually can't.

Plus there's just having things in common, like just being able to know one another's experience without having to explain. Part of this is that growing up feeling different or defective in a certain way tends to shape your character, especially in the sense of being habitually very reserved in which things you tell people. I also think the gender thing plays a role, which is probably actually something most gay people disagree with. But I don't feel like I intuitively understand most straight girls in the way they seem to understand each other, and I don't act entirely like a guy either. (And I'm not saying all straight people are really gender-typical, just that in general they are.) It's just kind of hard to have close friendships with people when you're always guessing at what they mean by things and you don't understand anything they do, and I don't feel like I understand most gay people either I guess, but most of the people I do feel really connected to are gay.

As for the subcultural thing specifically though, there are gay subcultures even if there's not really a singular one.
