RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

The forums are mostly read-only and are in a maintenance/testing phase, before being permanently archived. Please use this time to get the contact details of people you'd like to keep in touch with. My contact details are here.

Please do not make a mirror copy of the forums in their current state - things will still change, and some people have requested to be able to edit or delete some of their personal info.

How do other people...

... act like they like school?

I walk around school all day looking totally miserable, because I am totally miserable. I've been miserable since day one of college. But other people either look all happy all the time, or they look all snooty and they totally look down on you for not instantly understanding every piece of shit the teacher spouts.

Just, how is it that other people don't look like they are on the verge of killing themselves? How do they stand it? More than stand it, seem to like it? What the fuck is wrong with them? Or what's wrong with me?

They just blithely say, "I have such and such classes! And I'm going to do such and such for a career! I love this! I'm so excited!" And I'm just like, school is shit and your job will be shit, why the fuck are you so enthusiastic.

You sure those are real live human beings? Laugh

I dunno, maybe they genuinely believe school will help them get whatever career they want and that it'll be totally awesome.

Sure, it can happen... but it isn't usually that simple.

Re: How do other people...

I've wondered this on numerous occasions myself. The way I figure it, when other people talk to each other they want to put on this facade and look good. Holding a conversation with some depressed motherfucker who's hating life is kind of shit.

Re: How do other people...

I asked my friend why she enjoys school so much as to want to be there on her birthday, she said something along the line of, "Well, all of my friends are here.. If I skipped school then nobody would be with me and it would be boring. It's a place I get to see everyone!"

Eh.

Re: How do other people...

My friends like school; they think that if they like it, they will do better in school and get fantastically paying careers. They consider school to be a good thing and something that I should be grateful for.

I'm quite the same as you, however.

Re: How do other people...

I actually did not hate high school when I was in it.

I'm talking about college.... I mean, it's totally legitimate to hate high school. High school is fucked up. And middle school and elementary school. But college is so much worse, and all these people walk around like it's the time of their life.

Re: How do other people...

Because that's what they've been led to believe by our society, that the 8 - 10 years of highschool and college are supposed to be the best time of your life. It doesn't register that if those truely are the best days of thier lives then they'll peak at the age of 23 and be miserable the rest of thier lives.

If most people realized the drudgery that awaited them after college, they would be less enthusiastic about thier classes. Or at the very least they wouldn't be making such a big deal out of them.
