RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

Gifted Students?

Sometimes I feel the students in school who are called Gifted to be an insult to the rest. Not saying I hate gifted people, XD, but it seems cruel how some kids are labeled gifted, and others labeled as having learn disablitlies. But isn't everybody gifted in some way? They always look at our weaknesses in school!

it is an indirect insult as i call it.
every body is gifted in some way or another.
the schools aren't intentionaly insulting kids, but they are.

do you mean the teachers just call them gifted and rub in people's faces type of thing? Or do you mean the kids in the Gifted & Talented class? If people are being rude then that's messed up, but other than that, in a (supposedly) academic setting, it's pretty hard for them to not differentiate at all. In fact that always frustrating me cuz I don't think it's helps any one when they try and lump all different types together in one supposedly homogenous group.

(I could be biased though because I used to be in the G&T program. :uhohSmile

EDIT: If you're referring specifically to the name "gifted" being sort of offensive I can see that.

Gifted Students?

You're mixing up gifted kids with nerds.

Not all gifted kids get good grades, or are super disiplined, or any of that shit.

I would know, for I am gifted, just not a nerd.

Your welcome.

^ Well, I can tell you're not a nerd, or you would have been attentive enough not to bump a 5-year-old thread.

But, ditto. My school pegs me as gifted, and I failed two classes last semester.

RE: Gifted Students?

Quote:But, ditto. My school pegs me as gifted, and I failed two classes last semester.

When I dropped out of school it was with two A's a B and an F. The English teacher was so distraught about giving me an F that I had to cheer her up. I told her that it truly didn't matter to me about getting an F. She required some kind of term paper and I was not interested. I told her that her F would have no effect on my future.

My school completely segregated the retards. The rest of us were divided into the dummies, the middle, and the advanced. You were placed into your class based on your grades so that the advanced kids were together, the middle kids were together, and the dummies were together. The exceptions were people like me who would be in some of each classes. As a result, I got to make friends with a wider group of people.

I am sure that the school administration was thinking that they were being progressive in teaching us according to our abilities. I do not think they were aware of how self-serving their approach was. By putting the dummies in one class, you can give easier tests. When you give easier tests, more students pass. When more students pass, it looks like you are really teaching.

I would contend that teaching is a fraud. Students with ability learn and students with less ability learn less. If teachers were really able to teach, then the ability of students wouldn't matter. It is a little creepy that the students do the learning and the teacher gets the paycheck.

The segregation of school is like the movie, "The Breakfast Club". Once you get out in the real world you will sadly find that most people live life as if they were still in high school. Some do escape its imprint and you may find an attractive girl who doesn't feel compelled to be matched up with the star athlete but falls for a guy with a good sense of humor instead. You may find a guy who isn't too particularly bright but has tons of friends because he has a kind heart. You may even find a bright kid who avoided getting caught up in the rush to college and purposely took a lower paying job that lets him spend more time with his family.

School exists to mold you into a component. The school machine passes you off to the work machine. The component life is one where your value is measured in your ability to serve the machine. The more abilities you have, the more value you have to the machine and the more material compensation you can earn.

The alternative life is one with minimal machine connection. You find greater value in your relationships with friends and family. Your character, compassion, and humor have more value in your relational connections than in usefulness for the machine.

You think its fun being labeled as gifted? It fucking sucks. All the teachers, your parents, everyone has high expectations of you. You become "the smart kid" and "the nerd". You become ostracized. Didn't help that most of the others in the gifted classes were arrogant cunts.

"You are so smart why can't you just do the work?"

"Lol lets put you in pre-AICE classes since you are so smart. It's not like you have anything else to do besides school!"

I'm labeled as 'gifted'. I'm also a 'nerd'. I absolutely hate school. Being in the gifted program does suck. Everyone has high expectations of you and give you extra work and worry about you even more than a normal kid if you get bad grades or hate school.

Gifted Students?

There's no better way to mess with people than to have them think you're smart, even if you aren't as smart as they think you are. And being nerdy is a badge of honor and a brotherhood.

The thing about gifted programs is it's like the school is singling out that certain people will succeed at life while everyone will fail and shit. I bet that the arbitrary decisions your kindergarten teacher makes about how "smart" you are, thereby branding you as a "gifted" kid, has more to do with it than if you are actually intelligent. Not to say there aren't differences in intelligence, and that some people aren't smarter than others. But if you give extra educational resources to certain children there's no doubt they'll usually do better academically.
