RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

The forums are mostly read-only and are in a maintenance/testing phase, before being permanently archived. Please use this time to get the contact details of people you'd like to keep in touch with. My contact details are here.

Please do not make a mirror copy of the forums in their current state - things will still change, and some people have requested to be able to edit or delete some of their personal info.

A sad sad story

I was going to the bathroom, in the 1st-3rd grade bathroom, because the place where we pray is near there.

And, a first grader tells me the sign says I am not allowed to be there. I told him the sign was wrong, but he went on and on...

If he knew my name he would have told on me (even though, during prayer, we are allowed to go there, but this kid didn't know that, but that's not the point).

He was so hellbent on not breaking any rules, and everyone following them.... at such a young age.

This is the proof that school brainwashes you.

I just hope that kid grows up and sees that rules are set against him, and not for him....

I highly suggest Mobb Deep's albums The Infamous and Hell on Earth, if you have not listened to it yet.

I never let them get me. I figured if a rule made no sense or I disagreed with it, I was not obligated to follow it.

I agree with the omegawolf...

If they can't give me a decent reason to follow to the rule without telling me to shut up then forget it..

Very sad Noo

Someday he might realize the truth though, it's too early for you give up on the kid I suppose....
He sounds like the kind that's better lift in the dark though, if he comes to the knowlage of the truth then he might have a nervous breakdown or end up with the worst case of depression you've ever seen...

The sooner you break it to him the better Smile

He probably hasn't been brainwashed yet. Keep in mind that little kids have the tendancy to eagerly help on anything.

he may not be completely brainwashed yet, but a few more years of that and as soon as he gets past the hormones he'll be another sheep in a cubicle. i remember once in kindergarten, we were working in groups and one kid said that he didn't like the teacher. everyone just FROZE like he had committed the highest crime ever, and one kid got up and told on him. we all expected him to recieve the worst punishment the school had, and when the teacher said that he hadn't done anything wrong we were all like "wha!?!?" It really is sad, the little kids aren't only taught in a way that ignores the bill of rights, but they're not even taught it exists!

Aren't all of our brains "washed" a certain way? His brain was washed so that he would agree with rules and follow them. Our brains have been washed into believing that compulsory education is bad, haven't they? Why do we frown at the concept of "brainwashing?" I'm asking this because I'm sure that if many people were "brainwashed" into thinking that compulsory education was a bad thing and/or that youth rights is a good thing, we would think of that as being positive.

Here, by brainwashed, I mean that people feel an obligation to listen to authority and rules.

And yes, I know he was a little kid, and I told myself that, but it's still sad.

I highly suggest Mobb Deep's albums The Infamous and Hell on Earth, if you have not listened to it yet.

Brainwashing in any case is bad, people shouldn't be forced into a certain viewpoint.

Personally, I don't think the people on this site are brainwashed, we don't hate school just because someone else tells us to, we observe it's negative effects almost everyday.

And usually, if something is true, you don't have to brainwash people into believing it. Well, unless they're really ignorant.

the difference with us is that we "washed" our OWN brains, most of us were already harboring opinions against the system before we got here, despite the overwhelming propaganda in favor of it. you can't brainwash yourself, that's just called having an opinion.

matt, arent you the one that said that no matter what, everyone is brainwashed in some way (i dont agree but still)

little kids dont like to break the rules and get in trouble, its not brain wash, its natural, besides, the kid prob just wanted to seem superior or be annoying

heh, the only thing that happened to me in first grade in the bathroom was me and my little friends would compare underware pictures, it went somethinglike this:

A)if you hav barbie, your not that bad
B)barney or something like that would pout you down as uncool
C)pokemon was totally win
D)disney princesses are also win, but pokemon were considered the winning pair

this basically determined you social status...hey it was first grade!

This is the proof that school brainwashes you.

I'll admit I'm like this to some extent. i wouldn't "tattle" on anyone for breaking the rules (unless theyre planning to bomb the school or something) but I follow them....for example, I wanted to go on SS during school but you're not supposed to use computers for anything but homework. so, I didn't go on.

But I'm not brainwashed. i guess you could say I'm a conformist with non-conformist ideas. It's just I've built up a reputation for being really quiet and studious and tame....and I don't want to part with that quite yet.
I am getting better at "being myself" at school though...

Nope.

Prayers won't get that kid to wake up, and prayers wouldn't get you to either.

oh god, ive met somany people like this at primary school.

Although i did i alot of shit when i was in primary school, i got in trouble so many times when i was kid, so stupid lol.

But yeah, a lot of kidds would suck up to teachers, they would constantly follow then around the footy oval during lunchtime and recess, they would always want to do things for them, i used to conform to that bullshit, well, going on messages for them, none of that ;foloowing htem round the footy oval' crap, thats just sad.

But meh.

i always hated hte kids who had nothing better to do than dob on people. it just made me think about how sucked in these people can get and how terrible it is, how much time do these kids dedicate to themselves than rather dedicating to school rules that dong help anyone?

But thats not been the case with many of us on this forum, we hated school from day 1 or day 2. Lol.
