RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

Suspended

So today, I was suspended from school for one day and assigned bullshit saturday school tomorrow morning at 8:30 AM.

Here is my story.

Yesterday, after school my dad gets a call while we are driving home. It was my senile 70 year old history teacher on the other line claiming that I was using my phone during class and that he repeatedly had asked me to turn it over to him. He then explained that I would get a referral. Immediately, I am outraged. Since my last phone incident at school, I have dramatically cut down on my use and avoid using it at all costs in his class in general. Also, I was never once contacted or notified that he had asked me for my phone. He never made it clear to me once. Not once.

The next day, today, I am in my first period class, quietly doing my work. About a half hour into class, security arrives, picks me up and takes me to the office. I am called into the VPs office shortly thereafter. He has the referral sitting on the desk in front of him when I walk in. He sits back in his plush chair and explains the entire story to me again. As I am sitting in the ancient chair, I could almost feel my blood pressure raising. Finally, when he asked for my response, I very calmly explained my side of the story.

The asshole then turns to his computer and brings up my record. He tells me he sees a fucking pattern in my behavior. He says I am defiant and have a long record of being just that. I nodded and said I was aware or my previous record. Finally, he explains that because of the discrepancy between the teacher and I that he would take it up with the teacher. I was starting to relax. He then asks for my phone. Due to the fact that the last time my phone was taken away by him it was returned broken, I told him that I could not hand it ever. He then explained that he would just have it in his desk drawer. I said, "Just as you cannot place trust in me, I cannot feel obligated to place any sort of trust or dependency in you. You are an appointed official, I had no part in deciding whether you got to sit in your chair and talk at me or not."

He then asked once again if I was going to hand it over. I said, "No, I don't think I will." After this, I could see him getting frustrated. He explained that he would have to suspend me and give me Saturday school. At this point a just about fucking lost it.

I responded by saying, "No that isn't going to work, I have some plans tomorrow." He said, "Too bad, you will have to change them." I was getting fucking mad by now.

"No, I don't think so. I think you will have to change this fucked up system you run called a school for it work. In fact, let me tell you something. Every morning, at 5:55 AM, my alarm goes off. At about this time, I feel like slamming my head against the wall until I am unconscious. I HATE SCHOOL!" I am so fucking tired of this shit hole. The only reason I still come here every fucking day on time is because I want to get the fuck out of here as soon as fucking possible. I HATE IT HERE! I cannot believe you can just sit in this goddamn office because you got some piece of bullshit paper that says so. Sorry, I cannot just sit here and swallow this shit. What you need to do, is open your fucking eyes, look out that 3 inch window over there and just watch for about 5 minutes every day at passing period. Look at what you see. You keep punishing and punishing us, but did you ever think there was something else wrong? No of course not. it HAS to be the students problem, it could never be the system or the administration. Wake up and look at it here. Look at what this place is."

He just sat there and told me to stop swearing. I said, "No, I am not going to. I like swearing. I don't feel the need to act professional in front of someone who is nowhere near actually being professional. I am sick of censoring myself for you, these are the words I chose, they get my point across."

After that, he explained my consequences and all that other shit. He told me to wait in the chair. I walked at while saying, "Thank you for your time."

Instead of sitting down, I went over to the counseling office to discuss my grades. All of them are good with the exception of Journalism which I am being switched out of for other reasons. We talked about my grade for a bit, then I just about broke down. I told him what happened and my counselor being the great guy he is told me to hang and all that good stuff. Even though I have heard it all before, it made me feel better.

I went back to my chair and sat down. 30 minutes later, my mom walked in, closely following the VP. They talked for about 5 minutes. I was then asked to come in. I sat down while he explained the same shit he just had. When he was done, he asked if I had anything to say.

Here is what I said, "Yes, I have something to say. Open your eyes, open your mind, look around, wake up. Do whatever the hell you have to do to realize this. Look at this place you are slowly turning into a prison. I am taken out of my class and sent home for in my opinion no good reason. What is the purpose of a school? Education, correct? I would like to think so. If that is true and you actually believe it, then why the fuck did you feel the need to pull me out of class and stop my education for this meaningless garbage? Give me a break with your idea of how things work."

"Ok Alex I know you are an angry young man, I will see you later."

"No, I am not done and you are going to listen to every one of my words for your own good. I know I am angry, I know I am not perfect, but you have no right to sit there and talk. Have you ever wondered why so many kids get in trouble? Why so many of us yell at you, dislike or hate you? Did you ever question it? It is not because you are authority, it is because you are out of line! You take me out of class, talk at me for a while, decide to suspend me and send me to Saturday school. Have you made a difference? No you have not. You have failed to teach me a listen. You are the one screwing up here. Don't discipline me. Educate me. Do your job. Stop punishing me. Look at the problems with the system, not me. I am not the one with the fundamental flaws. You are the one who needs to take a look at the operations you are conducting. You are not going to fix me by screwing up my life and my relationships with my parents. I am not the one failing school. You are failing me."

I then walked out and never looked back.

At first my parents were pretty pissed off, but now, things have calmed down, well up until about 30 minutes ago when my dad got an email from my Journalism teacher saying I was failing her class. I am going to be switched out in under a week. Why he was so surprised by this I do not know. Then, he handed me a printed copy of his reply. In which, he apologized for what I had done to screw things up in the class. Which was nothing. I got pissed off, we argued, I won.

I do not feel like going into detail here, but basically, I proved him wrong on every point. He then backed off into submission and quit responding.

What do you make of this bullshit? I swear, if this causes any more delays in my flying, driving or my phone is taken away, I am extremely fucking close to doing something crazy.

Assaulting or threatening to assault someone will likely backfire. Some people would just love for their opponent(s) to do something that stupid!

OK. The way things are now is bad, we know. But learn to control your anger. Don't repress it and then kill 20 people, just try to keep it under control.

Aleksandr:

So, tomorrow is another day. You've overreacted and have some penalties. Your parents are not going to take your side after what you have said to the VP. Do you feel like you have accomplished anything?

Seems to me you are frustrated because things aren't going your way and you are blaming everybody else because you were caught doing something you were told not to do. (Messing with your cell phone) If you were putting as much energy into doing the work for your journalism class as you are trying to game the system you might not be failing that class (for whatever reason).

I hope you can think of some ways to mitigate the damage you have done. You have gotten to vent, now, suck it up. For one thing, when you are in too deep, quit digging. Take your punishment like a man and think about better ways to get where you really want to be.

I feel somewhat accomplished. For one thing, saturday school has made me wake up early on a weekend which IMO is a good thing. Yeah, I know exactly what you mean about blaming other people. I'm not quite ready to admit that to the fullest extent, but I am starting to take responsibility.

When it comes to Journalism, I was asked, by the teacher to drop the class for a completely illegitimate reason. I did not object to this because I was getting tired of the teachers bullshit indoctrination.

I am taking my punishment like a man. As much as i know I don't deserve it I can't change it now. Things will be alright. Yesterday serves as a perfect example for what happens when you hold anger in too long, which I did.

Yeah, keeping anger in does tend to do that Razz

But you explained yourself to those people pretty well. I'd never have the guts to do that...

A) Great argument, you handled yourself very well.
B) Every point you made was correct, however, for your own benefit, it would've been smarter not to curse. I ain't saying that's a good thing, I am saying he may have listened more if you didn't.

Oh ,and on that note, FUCK HIM.

I highly suggest Mobb Deep's albums The Infamous and Hell on Earth, if you have not listened to it yet.

I am not exactly sure. Before I left he told me that he sees no reason for me to have a phone at school. I said it was bullshit.

Isn't this pill regularly given to people who don't like school so they can stop thinking about other things and focus on the boring schoolwork? I found it hilarious that you posted this in response to a rant about how schools are prisons.
