RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

The forums are mostly read-only and are in a maintenance/testing phase, before being permanently archived. Please use this time to get the contact details of people you'd like to keep in touch with. My contact details are here.

Please do not make a mirror copy of the forums in their current state - things will still change, and some people have requested to be able to edit or delete some of their personal info.

school or happiness

you know how parents and teachers say school is the most important thing ,well what about happiness.
if you're sad and depressed, you don't want to do anything, and think there's nothing left, and you're not happy, you could end up in a mental ward or commit suicide.so which should be more important to kids, school or happiness?

i would say happiness.

They've been deluded into believing material success will lead to happiness.

Thats what I chose. But people today have the warped perception there is some sort of set path to finding happiness that involves making alot of money and owning alot of crap that we don't need. And the people who tend to have that much money and material crap tend to be those with high paying jobs that demand alot of formal education. Therefore people come up with the idea that school = $ = happiness, which couldn't be further from the truth.

Those are also the people who have virtually no free time and almost never see their families. Their children are in day care or school while they work 40+ hours per week so they can have their huge house, their Hummer, their HDTV, their XBox 360, etc. They have no family bond because they never see each other. Their children grow up deprived of any sense of family or continuity. Why do you think today's teens feel so distant from their families? It's because they were raised by strangers instead of their parents and came to see their parents only as a roof and a wallet.

The extended family was destroyed in the 19th century and the nuclear family will follow it in the 21st.

I often think about what you are saying. When I am sitting in class or in trouble, I think to myself, "What the fuck am I even doing here? I hate it here, I want to leave, I want to do as I please. Why the fuck should I care about education if I do not need it to be happy?"

There is the problem. Because the world has placed so much value on money. To get the things we want, we need money, to get that money we need a good job. To get that good job, we need a piece of bullshit paper from a good school. In order to get that, we need an, "education." Of course this education cannot be anything even remotely related to the lives most of us will someday lead.

That is how the world works. It is not the way it should work. Fuck that. I do not require huge amounts of money, 20 100,000 cars, a huge house and a warddrobe full of clothing.

I am happy with a Ford pickup, my computer, my ipod, my skinny levis and white t shirts.

Thats all I need in addition to a place to live.

Happiness. People think I'm crazy for deciding to not go to college. I mean, I will have some education so I can become an effective cartoonist, but not college. The only money I need will be the cash I need to live comfortably. And the things I'll need to start off myself are a 12" TV, desk and bed I have now, free furniture from various relatives that don't need it, bicycle for transportation (viva Chicago!) among other things, such as things from a thrift store. Biggrin

I don't need a lot of cash to be happy. As long as the things I have work the way they are, I don't need an HDTV (the video on those things are CRAPPY, in my opinion) the top-of-the-line game system, or fancy cars (though I will follow in my half-sister's footsteps and maybe buy an expensive, yet very fuel-efficient car if I need to get one)

I will tell you this, though. My U.S. History 1 teacher (who is awesome) tells us to save 10 percent of what we earn and not touch it for any reason. I'm supposing this is for retirement or a very rainy day. But it is good advice. When my contemporaries are struggling to make ends meet after retirement, I can just drink my glass of champagne and chuckle at them.

Then again, God loves to screw me over. Rolleyes
