RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017
The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.
If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.
To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.
I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.
I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.
I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.
I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.
Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.
Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

Hey I'm new, need some help on a situation...
I hate school. I've read the articles and I'm glad a lot of people are like me. I have a few questions. I'm a sophmore, 10th grade, in high school. Freshman year was a great experience actually and was not that bad but for some reason this year is just an awful grind. I'm not passing my classes and my parents are very upset.
The chances I could get them to homeschool me are slim to none. Main reason is, when I ask my mom she says "Neither me or your father have what it takes to homeschool you".
Both my parents haven't finished college, yet my dad went for 2 years. I honestly don't see myself graduating the way it is going. I might show my parents some of your responses. They won't believe me, but the only way I will not fail high school is if I get home schooled. I can't stand going to school everyday it's simply not right for me. I can't concentrate at all.
By the way, if I were to just get a High School Education or GED (are they same thing?) could I get a decent job wihtout going to college?
Thanks.

Damn, so many new members in such a small space of time...
Don't think I can help much, only in Year 7 myself.

Your parents wouldn't have to teach you in the way that a teacher does, they could just provide some resources for you. Books, the web, someone they know who can help you, anything. As long as you can use these resources, homeschooling should be fine for you.
But maybe a member here who's actually being homeschooled could help you more than I can. =/

Re: Hey I'm new, need some help on a situation...
Thank you for the replies.
I'd like to say my parents are extremely ignorant, especially my dad. He was raised by the rule "Go to school, get to college, get a degree, get a good job, get married, make sure you pay the bills because the men are supposed to, have a kid, and live your life together"
He is unopen to reason. I've told him "dad you will never learn one more thing the rest of your life, unless you realize that you are not special in anyway and just like every other human."
He laughs. Is there any thing I could tell him to actually open his eyes and make him think outside the box.
I am being crippled by school and I really want to open my dads eyes to the situation.
There has to be some words to just make him think a little. What are those words?

Why didn't he finish? And does this mean both of your parents have bad jobs?

Luck is afoot! There is a common kind of homeschooling called Community Home-based Education (CHBE), which I take, and your parents could cope with. I meet with a man every week and he gives me a packet of work to do, and I do it in that week, and then turn it in, then he gives by another one, so on and so forth. I can do my work anywhere I want, including at the CHBE center (usually a spare or detached building at a local school), at the park, at home, or at a learning center. If you can keep up with the work, there would be very minimal involvement for your parents except going to the meeting every week.

Basically. Some high level Universities or huge major political or business type jobs might think a little less of it, but it's the same thing overall.

Yeah, the homeschool guy is me. I'm not in it quite yet, but in my coming junior year I'll be entering homeschool. The way I got into it was I overwhelmed both of my parents with negative facts about school until they cracked. You could try that, Gnome. It may not work, but if you can at least make your father think, he may at least understand your misery.

Re: Hey I'm new, need some help on a situation...
you can take online classes.
If there isn't a state sponsored online class center for your state,
you can get credit hours through a community college (i've been looking into this), but of course that would cost a significant ammount of money.
Good luck with your old school mentality parents, your dad sounds alot like my mom.

Re: Hey I'm new, need some help on a situation...
Thanks a bunch for the responses. I'm going to talk to my dad this weekend. I'm still not sure I want to go through with it yet, though. mainly because i'll never see half my friends again. But it is worth it to do my work in my own environment.
I just need my space, I'll get B's if I can get my work at my house and work by myself, at school I'm getting D's.

Sometimes I go have lunch at my old school just to see my friends.
I don't get a visitor's pass or anything, and nobody notices/cares. You can still call them and stuff, too.

Re: Hey I'm new, need some help on a situation...
One thing my school does is homeschool, overseen by the school's counselors. You could try talking to them to see if they have a program similar to mine's. Specifically, a teacher brings you your work for the week, and at the end of the work, the teacher takes and gets it graded and gives you the results the next week. If you can't get a homeschool done by your parents, try looking into that sort of thing. It's usually done by students with medical problems, but I don't think there are limits for who can do this sort of thing.

From what I was told (and I may have been lied to) a High School Diploma or a GED alone will not get you a great job, you'll live a poor life.

Re: Hey I'm new, need some help on a situation...
You'll probably live a better life than you would without one, but that's judt because the system fucks you over. Damn school. Yeah, in response to the topic, I just registered my home as a private school, which was surprisingly easy. I feel like I'm conning the government, which just makes it even better.

Re: Hey I'm new, need some help on a situation...
It bothers me when people use the terms "poor life" and "better life" when talking about how much money you may or may not get in life. Money does not define whether a life is good or bad. It can make it easier or more comfortable though.
