RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

Gym Class Mandatory?

I have a gym class this trimester, and need two gym credits to graduate. This reallllllly ticks me off, do they really think forced humiliation is going to teach us lifelong healthy habits? Discuss?

Re: Gym Class Mandatory?

I strongly disagree with making any class mandatory.

Gym teaches students to hate sports. For me, it takes up 3 hours of my time every week, and lowers my self-confidence. Both of these factors effect my ability to perform well in subjects I actually enjoy, such as Math or History.

PE was mandatory where I live all the time, until I went to a private school that didn't have any PE at all. That was a relief...

Re: Gym Class Mandatory?

Unless you're in a private school, they can't fail you in gym so long as you show up. Its the easiest grade you'll ever earn, just think of it that way.

I attend a public school. A really bitchy teacher (thanks God I don't have her) failed a girl, even though she attended about 92% of the classes and had a valid doctor's note for the rest. I'll admit it, the girl was rather unfit. But she came to the classes, and participated (she wasn't exactly eager and enthusiastic) but she didn't just sit there either.

Thankfully, I have a more humane gym teacher won't give anything lower than a C if you're making a reasonable effort. I don't think I'd call it "the easiest grade I'll ever earn", that's Art, at least for me.

Re: Gym Class Mandatory?

I don't understand how 2/3 of the voters picked yes. This site is against mandatory schooling...wouldn't that automatically make us against mandatory gym class?

So, no, gym should not be mandatory, especially in high school. No high school classes should be mandatory!

Re: Gym Class Mandatory?

The reason people voted yes is because the question is "do you" not "should you".

Re: Gym Class Mandatory?

Today was my first day, I've been out with bronchitis.. and my mom even had me bring a note asking to have me sit on the sidelines so I wouldn't be DYING.. But we were doing dancing, so she decided that was easy enough for me; was not! I was coughing all over my partner(s), I felt soo bad about it, and seriously, DANCING??? I mean, did they purposely pick something with a high rate of humiliation like that? It actually wasn't too bad for me, because well, it was the type of dancing where the guy pretty much directs you, but I felt so bad for the guys that didn't know what they were doing! Thankfully the class seems pretty nice on the whole, if it were only a bunch of jocks and cheerleaders I would die.

I've never heard you only have to show up, I think you can only get away with that if you have a serious health problem. I mean, if that is a rule, no teacher I've had has followed it.

*drools with longing* That sounds AMAZING. Except, I would guess since they cut that they probably cut like art and stuff too? Even art wouldn't bother me; do you guys still have choir???

I'm sure he means "Physical Humiliation" classes. He's not being educated, just humiliated.

Actually, the quotation marks are the because i kind of conside the phrase "physical education" to be a bit of an oxymoron. you know, like "jumbo shrimp" or "millitary intelligence".

Re: Gym Class Mandatory?

Two years of PE are required at my school. Its actually not that bad, I mean, I'm pretty out of shape, but the class is still really easy, though it is boring.

Re: Gym Class Mandatory?

I actually like P.E. It's better than sitting on my ass learning Latin phrases. Then again, it's always come pretty easily to me.

Even if you hate it, just drift through it. It's probably the easiest grade you'll ever get. For example, last semester I wouldn't even do the warmup exercises (preferring instead to engage in games of basketball while everyone was dealing with the fun of running and stretching, in that order, for upwards on 15 minutes, hah), and I still got something like an 88.

Re: Gym Class Mandatory?

My first time around this post was such a rambling mess I'm cleaning it up significantly.

Points against P.E. :

-I'm all for staying healthy & fit, but I prefer to do so in a ridicule-free zone, preferably my own house.

-It's pathetic, but Elementary P.E. was such an embarrassing experience it makes me, in the back of my mind, think of exercising as an innately shameful experience.

-Gym classes don't try to start with unfit kids and bring them up to a fit level gradually and with a plan of attack, they just throw people of all different fitnesses together and some excel, some flounder. Too bad for the flounderers, tough luck.

-Class periods aren't long enough for shower/get ready time, so if you did have a useful P.E. period, you'd have to go through the next class dripping with sweat, and the whole day you'd smell. Call me superficial..

Like many problems with school, lack of options is the #1 issue. I would be fully open to an Independent Study P.E., where (if the gym teacher was actually somewhat educated) you'd meet with the teacher and get an exercise program lined up to get yourself fit, report back periodically, then write a final paper about what you did, the science behind doing those exercises, what sort of progress you saw, etc. It'd be amazing.

We have to take 4 semesters of it in order to Graduate. I used to hate to hate gym more then words can describe, but know it's kind of fun when you have nice people in your class.
