RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

physical Fitness test

What is up with school its like a drill camp for kids. Why make kids run 1.5 miles, for what to keep us in shape thats our problem. If we dont want to get into to shape THEN LEAVE ME ALONE!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Im fat and lazy so i walk the runs, runs count for 60% of our overall grade which is bull. Why force me to run by threatning me with defiance, I can defy anyone i want its my fucking life. Why can they make choices that effect me. WTF I wanna bomb my school so much, im sick of their crap

Re: physical Fitness test

I feel your pain. I, too, have been a victim of the new "health options". What "health options" really mean is, "do this to get in shape or we kill you".

Re: physical Fitness test

How about us kids who ARE in shape, but stay in shape other ways? I'm 145 pounds, five foot ten, and I'm in good shape. However, I have little stamina - PE kills me. I keep in shape by rock climbing!

Re: physical Fitness test

The thing is we are getting tested which goes to the sate for statistics
They told us what they expected by standards, the stupid thing is everyone is different. Body types, breathing, stamina and its classified by age and sex. From the running to the push ups to the sit ups. When will it end, and why test us on this. It pointless, except its like a drill camp to wear you down for your other classes so the teachers bitch when you sleep.

Re: physical Fitness test

My "Physical Education" really pissed me off last term. I broke a vertebra during the summer break, the doctors said I was lucky not to end up in a wheel chair. Bed tied (not even allowed to sit up) for seven weeks, then I was allowed to return to school, but not to participate in PE. About three weeks before the end of the term, my vertebra healed enough for me to start PE again. My teacher said that since I had not attended for most of the term, she had to give me a physical test on which my final grade would be based. What's more-this test was administered instead of my Maths class! I enjoy few subjects at school, but maths is among them.

Now, after several months of not being even allowed to sit, of course I was extremely unfit! I don't want to say what my grade was, but it wasn't pretty.

So I do understand what you're going through.

Asthma sucks. Try running around the school's entire campus in a Navy program five friggin' times. Then pushups on CONCRETE!

In gym, we have to roller-skate as part of the cirriculum. However, they don't teach you anything. They just let you roll around the gym and hope you don't leave and skate around the school.

Re: physical Fitness test

They came to my school for registration for hight school, they said my semester grades sucked, my grades are better but then they started saying that my grades are bad enough that I might get held back. They said i need to keep up good grades and score high on end of the year exams. Why do they need to base most of my placement on a frekin test. That doesnt mean squat to me. A test is nothing but bullshit and more bullshit Rocket

Re: physical Fitness test

I understand that you're pissed about having to participate in gym, Magic, but you're talking about it as if it's their fault that you're not doing good in gym. It's not. I mean, seriously look at what you're doing to yourself by refusing to participate. You're killing your grade, you're not helping yourself, and, perhaps worst of all, your lack of participation as a means of defiance falls on deaf ears; it accomplishes nothing that you could hope to achieve. I know you don't like the fact that you're forced to take gym, and I know you'd love to have it changed, but not doing anything, whether in the class or out of it, will not make things go your way. So please quit complaining.

Re: physical Fitness test

There are times where the benefits of not being defiant outweigh the cons. Like when your GPA is at risk. Sadly, that is a necessity to do good in the real world. Unless, of course, you have some very rare, special talent that will make you millions; then to hell with your GPA.

A lot of life is doing things that you don't want to do, though. It's simply unavoidable.

Yeah. But most of these things have a purpose. Gym class doesn't (see my above post). The only reason I participate in gym class is because I need the grade (if I just walked instead of runing during gym, I'd get a D at best. My parents could get physically violent if that happened).

But I respect magic's choice not to participate. I always respect others' choices, school should too.

Re: physical Fitness test

I like physical fitness, coercion is the worst possible choice though. People who get in great shape and stay in shape for the rest of their lives never do it because they continue what they were forced to do in school. They do it because of guys like Jack LaLanne who swims two hours a day in his 90s and other positive examples of how you should treat your body.

Re: physical Fitness test

What he's basically saying is, "Participate in gym, because otherwise, you will get a bad grade and not do anything to help yourself."

So no.

Re: physical Fitness test

I interpreted it as something like, "You're just hurting yourself by not participating, your small act of defiance is not going to make any difference- Please stop complaining." Which is a bit more reason than how yo interpreted it.

This is a place for ranting(among things that aren't considered ranting), so I don't agree with his last statement, and it sounds like magic doesn't care about his grade- So I think that he is actually helping himself by not participating, however he is not changing anything. However, that is not what I was hoping you were being sarcastic about.

Your comment of "This forum is for people who OPPOSE SCHOOL. Not for people who are in support of it." is what I strongly disagree with. We need people who disagree with us; to keep us on our toes, to help us defend our hatred towards compulsory schooling against new reasons, and to look at things from a different point of view.
