RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

The forums are mostly read-only and are in a maintenance/testing phase, before being permanently archived. Please use this time to get the contact details of people you'd like to keep in touch with. My contact details are here.

Please do not make a mirror copy of the forums in their current state - things will still change, and some people have requested to be able to edit or delete some of their personal info.

Choice brought by force is no longer choice

So we want school to change, right? But what about all those kids and adults who don't? Many people these days are content with their place in society. It's easier having others tell you how to live. Unless you're extremely optimistic, you'd agree that we can never change everyone. If we ever have a revolution, there are going to be individuals we piss off. In a way, we'd be coercing them into our new system, the way they coerce us into theirs. Ironically forcing choices on others.

Now, I didn't make this topic because my conscience is hurt. I know exactly where I stand: I couldn't care less if these people feel what we feel. I'd just like to hear your opinion, knowing we might have to be hypocrites to change the world. I'm past the point of hoping we could change every mind before changing the system. Some people will never understand, and they're going to be royally angry if/when we rip their world apart.

Short version: some choose to be drones. Forcing change upon them would be coercion. We'd still do it, right?

Re: Choice brought by force is no longer choice

We wouldn't actually be forcing change upon them, just ourselves. The old schools and jobs and society could still exist, but we just want to change the fact that there are no opportunities for those of us who don't fit well into the system.

Even if there were a major revolution, people would always be free to regress back to their old ways. When the freedom to really control one's life comes about after years of control, the peole who take advantage of the change to take control of their lives will be separated from those who won't, and those who won't will just regress back into their old lives, afraid of change, and will just be controlled and be willing to be manipulated all over again without caring. People who like the system of control will always find a way to be controlled, no matter what we do. We aren't really forcing them into anything, but if we did, they'd still reject it and be who they are.

Re: Choice brought by force is no longer choice

The best solution is to leave everything as it is, except just make school in its current state completely optional. That way people who want to be told what to do can have that, and people who don't want that can have what they want as well.

Of course, school would probably evolve over time once people start realizing there are better ways of doing things. But there will always be people who prefer being told what to do, so there will always have to be people willing to tell them what to do. And maybe someday the people giving the orders will be more mature and responsible themselves, and be good examples. It could happen. Razz

Re: Choice brought by force is no longer choice

I know we could just live and let live... But sometimes I feel this compulsive need to change the system whether they want it or not, you know? I don't care if a group of certain people prefer to be controlled, something just tells me it shouldn't be this way. I could be in the wrong, but I don't care. I genuinely want the best for everyone whether they want it or not...

It's strange, I can't explain it.

I know exactly what you mean. The thing is, they feel the exact same way, which is why we are forced to go to school.

Fuck 'em. We can't just let them force us to do something because they might get their feelings hurt by not being forced to do something.

Re: Choice brought by force is no longer choice

Sadly, these people aren't going to be angered because they're no longer forced to do anything. They're gonna be pissed because of change, and change alone. Things would change whether they want it or not.

On my grumpy days, I don't believe "we do our thing, they do theirs" is good enough. I have an urge to force their eyes open, make them see that they could have and be so much more. It's a strange mixture of good intent and hateful frustration. I can't call myself a libertarian because of this irrational desire to change people for the better. If only the "better" wasn't subjective.

Whatever, "fuck 'em" is right. Like I said in the first post, I'm past the point of caring how they feel.

^I understand the anger you feel toward them. However, "Fuck 'em" is really all we can say. We can't force people to change; that's something every individual has to decide for him/herself.

Quote:The best solution is to leave everything as it is, except just make school in its current state completely optional.

The people who would stay in school, the people who want to be told what to do all the time, they would not be happy with this. They don't just want to be told what to do all the time. They want never to have to make their own decision about anything. And if there's even a choice between subordinate or being independent, that's too much for them. They want to believe that the system they are in is good and necessary, and if the choice exists to leave it, if they condone that, then they are admitting that they've done something wrong, or something wrong was done to them. They don't want to face that.

So, yeah, we want to force them to face that. Because if we don't, they're impeding our freedom. Each person owns themselves, which is why I don't respect a person's "freedom" to own a slave. I will force them to recognize other people's freedom. That is a requirement. If that by natural consequence forces them to accept their own freedom, and they don't like that, too fucking bad.

Laugh
Also true. But tough shit for them, then. They're just gonna have to deal with that one. They can still get other people to make all their other choices for them though. Giggle
