RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

The forums are mostly read-only and are in a maintenance/testing phase, before being permanently archived. Please use this time to get the contact details of people you'd like to keep in touch with. My contact details are here.

Please do not make a mirror copy of the forums in their current state - things will still change, and some people have requested to be able to edit or delete some of their personal info.

Critical Thinking

is not actually critical thinking.

Give me a break. The messsage in and of itself is fine enough, but you can't teach things like that in SCHOOL, unless you're willing to make the extra effort. Kids never learn when you teach "critical thinking" because the majority of them have already been so dragged through the system, they don't care any more, and the people who do think about it still think school should be mandatory for idiotic reasons.

That, and it's hypocritical. Yeah, you want to teach me about that? Why don't I "critical think" then and persue what I want?

Re: Critical Thinking

I was awful in critical thinking. In order to pass the class this is what you had to do. There are 2 tests. One at the beginning of critical thinking, one at the end. If you get a better score on the one at the end than you automatically pass the class. So I purposely failed the first one and tried on the second one. And I thought it was pretty hard too, I didn't learn one thing from it, yet passed.

Re: Critical Thinking

Yes, critical thinking, obviously, but I mean in school, them teaching it is a slap in the face.

Re: Critical Thinking

What do you guys mean by "critical thinking?"

My schools always use the term, but I never really understood what it meant.

Re: Critical Thinking

I love it.

Teacher: You must think critically.
Student: Why?
Teacher: Because I said so now shut up!

I highly suggest Mobb Deep's albums The Infamous and Hell on Earth, if you have not listened to it yet.

THAT. Is almost exactly what happened in my school. Stabhead

They kept encouraging us to ask "why?" about absolutely everything... so we asked "why?" every time they told us to do something without giving us a reason. Apparently, that was not what they had in mind. Laugh

Re: Critical Thinking

That's what I'm talking about. Critical thinking is good, but teaching it in school is useless.

Re: Critical Thinking

Yeah, except maybe if they actually took the questions seriously themselves and realized school should be optional. That'd be cool. But nooo, anyone attempting that would get in trouble for disrupting class or something.

Re: Critical Thinking

Critical thinking is being critical about your thinking, to look out for fallacies and your own biases.

That's the stupidest system I've ever heard of. So if I got 95% on the first one, and 90% one the second one I'd fail? If I got 10% on the first one, and 25% on the second, I'd pass?

And do we not learn that by first practising on others?

Re: Critical Thinking

What they teach in school isn't even real critical thinking. Its learning to think in the way that they want you to. Real critical thinking gets you suspended, especially when you act on it. I know that from personal experience

Is this one of those weird subjects taught in american schools?

Me no like thinking. Me like following big man with big FIRE.

Re: Critical Thinking

I especially loved all the critical thinking I was suppose to do in English class, where I would question books/essays, but apparently the "wrong" way because the teacher I mean author wasn't thinking about it like that but rather this.
