RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

The forums are mostly read-only and are in a maintenance/testing phase, before being permanently archived. Please use this time to get the contact details of people you'd like to keep in touch with. My contact details are here.

Please do not make a mirror copy of the forums in their current state - things will still change, and some people have requested to be able to edit or delete some of their personal info.

Suggestions on being remembered more easily.

How not to be 'just another newbie'.

Get an avatar and signature. Because if you don't, unless you post something memorable, or have an extremely memorable name where people can match your posts to your name, you just become 'another n00b'.

For an avatar: Get something that defines you, is funny, memorable, whatever; but do not make it to big or annoying or anything, otherwise people will just block it.

For a signature: Add a picture, a small picture. I can not tell you how many sites I had to block images from because the signature picture was just so huge and annoying. Add a quote, describe yourself, give advice, a funny link, whatever. Just if you have a lot of text, make it small-ish. (Like mine)

Anyone else have any other suggestions?

I highly suggest Mobb Deep's albums The Infamous and Hell on Earth, if you have not listened to it yet.

Re: How not to be 'just another newbie'.

I've got one, make sure you know how to type! Using bad grammar/spelling pisses me off to know end, and I mostly just ignore posts that's hard to read, especially if the post is by someone new and I don't know them that well.

Learn the English language. Spelling, punctuation, and grammar is a must.
Contribute something either funny, intriguing or intelligent whenever possible.
Know what you're talking about.

Damn it! That's twice now that's happened to me, my grammar skills are going down!...maybe I'm catching someone's idiot or something, I might have to leave this site for a while, so that I can recover. Razz

Tempted to un-sticky this... cuz it gives the impression that a person can't just be himself around here.

I didn't get that impression. To me it sounds like a (rather short) guide to not give a bad first impression.

But maybe I'm weird for thinking of it this way, so other opinions would probably be good.

Not intended to do that, just giving a way to make you stick out, because with a flood of new members, I often forget people.

Ah, ok. That makes sense. I edited the title to reflect that. Evil

The only piece of advice you need: Act like me and everyone should love you. If you don't act like me act like darthmat did when he first came and make so many posts people can't ignore you.

I got one. Don't erect an entire thread about yourself eg. "Does Bad_Engrish_Kid FTW?" It looked like a good idea at the time, but was a peice of utter FAIL.

I think this topic is stupid. People should behave how they want to.

No, but it sounds like you have to do this.
