RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

The forums are mostly read-only and are in a maintenance/testing phase, before being permanently archived. Please use this time to get the contact details of people you'd like to keep in touch with. My contact details are here.

Please do not make a mirror copy of the forums in their current state - things will still change, and some people have requested to be able to edit or delete some of their personal info.

Therapy works; its a very slow process but through intimate and pointed conversation you can help someone eradicate an unwanted and destructive behavior.

Psychiatry though... I mean I know that our drugs have gotten better. But still... Placebo results have always topped the results of the actual drug in test trials. I feel like we are just throwing anything into pills and seeing what they do.

I think psychiatrists just think everyone is similar, and it's annoying.

Anything that ever happened or will... one condition, it has to be amazing.

Re: Feeling suicidal? These might help... (hopefully)

It varies. I believe Happy Camper found a good psychiatrist a while back, and the drugs he prescribed her have helped her immensely. There are bad psychiatrists and bad drugs you always have to be on the watch for, but I feel that psychiatry shouldn't be dismissed as an option.

I must say, though, if you are considering committing suicide, just try, try as hard as you can, to think about how long your problems are going to bother you, and then consider how long you likely have left to live. Go to google, and figure out what portion of your life your problems are going to affect you. And then consider how much more of life you have to live, and remember, you haven't even lived half your life yet. It's almost certain that if you're down in the dumps now, that things will average out with an awesome period later on.

How do you think we do everything? Process of elimination works. What they've done is gotten a rough idea of what they need through science, and worked from there.

Re: Feeling suicidal? These might help... (hopefully)

Yeah I've felt this feelings for so many times. And that's when I encounter big problems in my life. As I remember, there is a moment when I'm handling my fathers gun and wants to pull the trigger in my head. But thankfully, I didn't do it. And now I can say I'm a strong person and whatever problems will come to my life I know I can surpass it. Biggrin

Well in Raikurons defense the guy did have a spam link in his signature when he first joined which was removed by an admin. Personally I find this all sort of funny.

Re: Feeling suicidal? These might help... (hopefully)

As I wrote those thoughts years ago, I might add this:

There's also another way to drop out of the system, and that is the inner life as some would call it. It is becoming the silent observer of your own thoughts and deeds, not being the judge but being a lurker in a way. It is a form of self-discipline (not a pretty sounding idea, is it?) that can be explored through meditation, writing, reading, and observing silence for a little bit of time every day. It is about acheiving the balance of tension and relaxation and reaching a point of stillness inside your brain to allow it to function better.

One way you can do this is live in the moment. Notice the beauty of nature. Pay attention to the fine details of a tree, even if you do not know the words to describe every thing going on with the tree. If you are stuck in a waiting game, see it as an opportunity to become more aware, to observe your thoughts.

This is a concept not nessecarily easy to explain, it is best off by doing. But it has helped me a long way in my depression.

"If you think you know what the hell is going on, you're probably full of shit." - Robert Anton Wilson

RE: Feeling suicidal? These might help... (hopefully)

I haven't been on this website in forever, but I thought I'd share the link that helped me the most:
http://www.cracked.com/article_15658_the...guide.html
It helped me come to terms with the fact that my whole life is a cage, but not only can I see through the bars, I know that the door will open the day I turn 18. So now I sit by the window, longingly gazing out and dreaming of the escape that will surely be mine one day, instead of trying to find something sharp enough to open my veins and release my soul from its imprisonment. I know that if I wait for the freedom, it will be so much sweeter than if I give up now...

"I have been allotted months of futility,
and nights of misery have been assigned to me.
When I lie down I think, ‘How long before I get up?’
The night drags on, and I toss and turn until dawn." Job 7:3-4

Both of my parents are teachers. My body is bound, but my mind is free.
