RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

The forums are mostly read-only and are in a maintenance/testing phase, before being permanently archived. Please use this time to get the contact details of people you'd like to keep in touch with. My contact details are here.

Please do not make a mirror copy of the forums in their current state - things will still change, and some people have requested to be able to edit or delete some of their personal info.

Working Towards Translating The Entire Site

I think this would be extremely hard and time consuming. But I still think it can be done.

What would have to be done:
1. A 'priority' list.
Obviously, the site intro was the most important to translate, so it was done first. A list of what needs to be translated most should be made.
2. Actually translating it.
We would need people to volunteer. I would, if I actually knew another language fluently.
3. Keeping track of what gets translated.
We would need to keep track of what gets translated into what language, and keep it public, so that someone doesn't waste their time doing it when it's already done.

Anyone agree/disagree? Have a better idea? Want to help?

I highly suggest Mobb Deep's albums The Infamous and Hell on Earth, if you have not listened to it yet.

Re: Working Towards Translating The Entire Site

The entire site... would be a bit unnecessary to translate. I mean, a lot of the articles say pretty much the same thing just in different ways. But some of the more important bits would be good to translate.

Also, maintaining that many different versions of various things is going to be a serious pain for me to handle, unless I convert the entire SS into wiki format. Which is going to happen eventually, just not right now Smile And with wiki format, just about anyone will be able to assist with the translating... so it'd make everything easier.

Re: Working Towards Translating The Entire Site

I didn't mean literally the whole site.

And so until that Wiki thingy or whatever is done, stave off on the translating?

I highly suggest Mobb Deep's albums The Infamous and Hell on Earth, if you have not listened to it yet.

Re: Working Towards Translating The Entire Site

I rather like the way the Tor project did it (link). For each page, you can take a look into which languages it has been translated, and details about these translations (how current it is, and who translated it). Each page is assigned a translation priority level. Translation guidelines for volunteers are also available.

I really like the idea, and would love to translate the most important articles into Czech. I just hope we have enough people fluent in a different language, but perhaps we'd get more attention if we did a forum wide announcement as opposed to a sticky in the least visited board.

Don't take life so seriously, it isn't permanent.

I think we do... I mean, the intro is in 10 different languages already. And in wiki format, it doesn't matter if it isn't very fluent at first, because others can fix the mistakes.

I'm just so lazy lately. Got a lot of other stuff going on. I'll get to it... eventually. Smile

Re: Working Towards Translating The Entire Site

I'm at a very basic level with the languages I am learning (And I mean VERY basic - I have only been learning Spanish for two hours a week, for less than a year, although i have been learning French at a slow pace for around three years or so, I am still only learning about the perfect tense and translating tenses, EG said, says, saying) but I will help, if I can.

Re: Working Towards Translating The Entire Site

Good idea, but I'd have absolutely no clue what is going on in the other language sections... and it'd be kinda sad if I didn't have a clue what was on my own site. Laugh
It'd have to kinda have one person (preferably more) fluent in each language to sort of "oversee" the section, so that people don't post all kinds of random crap there.

Well, I know a bit of Polish. Not much though. I don't think I'll really be able to do too much translation.

Well once again I propose myself as a native speaker of French and close-to-fluent in English.
I'm also learning Japanese at the moment so maybe eventually ...

Re: Working Towards Translating The Entire Site

Have you thought of getting Google to translate pages and then putting those translations up somewhere on the site? People who spot mistakes could then correct a few for you, without it taking up much of their time. Bit by bit they would evolve towards being completely right.

Here's the plan in more detail: put a whole stack of vital paragraphs from a number of different pages onto a special page inviting help from translators. Each paragraph would be numbered so that it's easy to find and it would have the English version followed by the attempted translation. Translators would simply send in improved paragraphs which you could then copy and paste into that one web page. Once a certain standard has been achieved, a paragraph would then be moved into the correct place on the site where ordinary visitors will see it, and a new paragraph to be translated can then be added to the special translation page.

Thanks for inspiring me to come up with this idea: I'll try it on my own site.

It's not going to happen, when there hasn't even been any new translations of the main page since 2008.

It's a shame, really.
