RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

Insane school-obsessed mother

Here are my grades for midterm.

P.E. - A
Social Studies - A
Language Arts (Adv.) - A
Math (Adv.) - C-
Science - A
Spanish - B

My mom went insane when she found out I had a C- in math (it should be a high B or a low A; a test that I failed caused it to drop to a C). She claimed I was "failing", and insisted that I was trying to get a D+ (which is untrue). She said that unless I raise it to at least an A by the end of the year, she would have total control over everything I would do over the summer.

I fucking hate her. This isn't the first time she's gone insane and tried to ruin my life.

None of which are bad grades.

That's happened to me several times, as well. For example, a few weeks previously I was accused of "flunking" a subject in which I had a decent, though not earth-shaking, grade in.

Why would you be trying to get a D+ in a class you are already doing respectably in? That makes zero sense.

Quote:She said that unless I raise it to at least an A by the end of the year, she would have total control over everything I would do over the summer.

The old ultimatum crap. Because, as everyone knows, privileges lead to flunking and the removal of said privileges will lead to academic success.

I'm actually currently in a conflict similar to yours with my parents right now. They took away internet rights (not knowing that I know where the modem is, hah! purloined internet = win) for my grades, which weren't dreadful, but hardly something I'd write to Grandmummy about.

I don't hate them, and I know the intention isn't to ruin my life (which they aren't) but I still think it's bullshit. As is your scenario.

Try having reasonable discourse with her, if you haven't already.

I assume you're questioning Bob?

I'm pretty sure her intention is to make my life a living hell. What has she done?
- Forced me to hold a bar of soap in my mouth for 15 minutes straight
- Trying to force me to be independent because "I don't appreciate her"
- Got me a tutor because I was "failing math" in sixth grade (got a B+ on a test; that wasn't good enough for her)
- Signing me up for way too many extracirricular activities because I "have too much free time"
- Almost destroyed my computer for reasons unknown

No, what did you do to keep your parents from knowing?

Re: Insane school-obsessed mother

'Bout the internet access?

Well, I knew where the modem was hidden, and I kept track of how it was hidden. So whenever I can, I hook it up and enjoy a few hours of internet time each day.

I'm beginning to get weary of this whole "stolen access" business though. I hate to say it, but I might actually need to *gasp* put some effort in on school. Omg

I remember when my home room teacher called up my mother because I "was having trouble at school". Here are the subjects she named as me having problems in: geography, chemistry, and history. She was right about the chemistry. I was averaging a C in geography, which isn't exactly awesome, but no reason to contact parents. From history, I had one grade so far. Guess what it was. An A+. And then my mum yelled at me because I "was failing three subjects: geography, chemistry and history".

Don't take life so seriously, it isn't permanent.

Re: Insane school-obsessed mother

I'm really sorry. That's awful. If it's a C- in advanced math, that's like an A- in any normal math(at my school at least). Your grades are excellent.
